Is it really possible?

Dear Friends,

Is it possible to get your kids to clean?

I get asked this very question so many times I have the answer committed to memory.  You see, the short and long answer is YES!

But you have to be willing to do the upfront work that must be done if you're kids are going to cooperate and clean up after themselves.

This is where the rubber meets the road so to speak.

The reason most kids don't clean is because their parents haven't laid the foundation necessary for them to take responsibility for their possessions and for keeping them in good order.

The second reason and probably one of the most important is their own particular attitude about cleaning.

Look if you hate to clean, if you're always bitching about it under your breath, your kids are going to pick up on that and you'll never get them to ever clean with or without you.

So the very first step to getting your kids to learn the fine art of home management is to stop complaining -  at least in front of them.  You don't have to go around and do the dance of joy every time you pick up the vacuum, but it does mean you need to instill in them the right attitude about cleaning.  So if your attitude sucks, well, there's will too.

So how do you change your attitude about cleaning?

Change the way you look at things and the things you look at change ~ Wayne Dyer

I loved Dr. Wayne Dyer. In simplest of sentences, he shows us how to easily change our attitude about anything.  Our attitude is all in the way we look at something.

So when you can change the way you look at housework, it becomes less of a chore.

A couple of things I like to think about when I don't feel like cleaning but know it needs to be done are:
  • How much better I'll feel when the house is clean
  • How I'm taking pride in the ownership of my home
  • How many calories I'll burn cleaning
Now maybe none of these will work for you, but I bet if you think about if for a bit you'll find some other way of looking at housework that doesn't leave you with feelings of doom and gloom.

There's not much we can control in life, but we can control our thoughts and attitudes.  So the next time you want to curse at the vacuum, remember to stop and change your perspective.  If not for your sake, for your kids sake.
