2017 Weinstock Award: BIAV was proud to present the 2017 Weinstock Award to Karen Brown, the executive director of Brain Injury Services (BIS). With over 40 years dedicated to the rehabilitative field, Karen has worked at state and local levels to ensure families connect with the services and resources they need. Last summer, she celebrated her 20th anniversary with Brain Injury Services.

Camp Bruce McCoy: We’re headed back to the Triple R Ranch in Chesapeake for Camp Bruce McCoy. Campers participate in a variety of activities such as horseback riding, arts and crafts, and swimming; activities are modified to meet the needs of nearly all levels of mobility and cognition, providing a wonderful experience to all of our campers.  Want to support this once in a lifetime experience? Legislator of the Year: The 2017 BIAV Legislator of the Year Award was presented to Delegate Brenda Pogge. Delegate Pogge represents Virginia’s 96th House of Delegates District, which includes parts of James City and York Counties. A member of the House since 2008, she serves as vice-chair of the House Education Committee.

Study Participants Sought: Dr. Kelli Williams Gary from VCU, in partnership with BIAV, is trying to better understand the experiences of African Americans and their caregivers after traumatic brain injury. VCU is conducting a research study examining the experiences of African Americans returning to work, school, or volunteer and leisure activities in the community and feelings about their quality of life after traumatic brain injury (TBI).
