Good morning!
Today, I'm excited to announce that I still have a job.
Or, in venturespeak, Brooklyn Bridge Ventures has successfully raised its second fund (and learned a few things), totalling $15.1mm in commitments. This isn't the juiciest VC news you've heard in the last week, and it doesn't include any NBA stars, but it's what we've got.
The TL;DR of all the press you'll see around about it:
- Still writing checks before others.
- Still leading.
- Still NYC focused.
- Still looking across almost every industry.
- Still a solo investor.

Inline caching is one of the primary techniques used to speed up languages – Clojure relies on it heavily through the JVM's usage of it as well as for its protocol implementation. However, the technique of inline caching doesn't have to be limited to just language implementations. In the right situations, it can be a powerful tool for speeding up normal programs. Structuring your code to be able to take advantage of inline caching can be a challenge in itself – if you have a runtime value that is expensive to compute but is based on a very dynamic context (e.g. function parameters), caching seems impossible. Specter gets around this by separating the computation into two phases: a static portion which is the same every time that code is run, and an efficient means of combining the cached static portion with the dynamic context. This talk will illustrate this powerful technique by going through the details of Specter's inline caching implementation – in which macros and the "eval" function play a central role.

Hey everyone, we felt the last (un)meetup was very successful, and it's a format that your organizers like a lot, so we want to try it again this month at Canary, who may have the coolest offices I've ever seen. Just to set the ground rules: the idea of this meetup is born out of the "unconference" format, which means it's loosely organized and community driven. At the beginning of the meetup people pitch topics and then break off into groups to discuss those topics. The topics are chosen by members of the community and they can either be something that person knows a great deal about or knows nothing about and wants to learn more. It should be expected that not a great deal of preparation goes into the topic, and this hopefully encourages more people to suggest topics since there is no pressure to prepare for weeks on end. Also participants are free to go from topic to topic if they wish to do so. Give it a shot and I think you'll like it too! I encourage people to share their ideas for topics in the comments sections, and I'll start!

Load balancing is something most of us assume is a solved problem. But the idea that load balancing is “solved” could not be further from the truth. If you use multiple load balancers, the problem is even worse. Most of us use “random” or “round-robin” techniques, which have certain advantages but are highly inefficient. Others use more complex algorithms like “least-conns,” which can be more efficient but have horrific edge cases. “Consistent hashing” is a very useful technique but only applies to certain problems. Tyler McMullen explains some of the ways that we can do better than “random,” “round-robin,” and naive “least-conns,” even with distributed load balancers. Tyler McMullen (@tbmcmullen) is CTO at Fastly, where he’s responsible for the system architecture and leads the company’s technology vision. As part of the founding team, Tyler built the first versions of Fastly’s Instant Purging system, API, and Real-time Analytics.

They say, “you are what you eat,” but do you truly understand what you’re eating, where it is comes from, and the impact it has? The journey of your food is often invisible and begins well before you find it in the market much less fork it on your plate. Through new innovations, the food system is evolving to accommodate a growing demand for sustainable sources, ingredients, and the distribution thereof. And with growing concern about climate change and nutrition, these innovations are more important than ever before. Join the conversation with Be Social Change at our Future of Food panel to not only understand what’s on your plate, but also how it got into your shopping cart and onto your dinner table. Come for the conversation, leave with some food for thought. {Drinks & snacks will be provided!}
