Have you heard of ConsenSys?
Did you read the Bloomberg Article about how they're locating the center of the ethereum world in Bushwick?
Come join the blockchain revolution at our 100,000 sq. ft. office development at 215 Moore St., Brooklyn.
Innovation, community and unbounded collaboration start now! Desk space and office tours available from our sponsor, please email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Are you on your way to work? Do you work in an office?
It's nice, right? Roof over your head, a desk with a big screen to work on. Maybe some pens in a jar. Are there snacks?
Remember Jolly Rancher Sticks? Not the little rectangular cubes they have now--the flat ones that barely fit into your mouth without poking your cheeks out when you were a kid. Now that was good candy. Sour Apple.
For many startups, the decision of where to set up shop comes down to how good the candy is. Whatever your decision, our sponsor SquareFoot is there to help. They take the hardest parts of finding a new office — understanding your options, figuring out where the candy wall might go, and narrowing your search — and make it simpler, more pleasant, and less time consuming. Best of all, their tenant services are 100% free.
SquareFoot. A better way to buy a mattress--and by buy a mattress, I mean search for commercial real estate.
Did you know that there's a startup that has fully constructed a nanobot suit that builds itself around you just like in Ironman?
Ok, well, maybe I made that up--but if there was, they'd be joining NYU's Creative Destruction Lab.
Creative Destruction Lab at NYU Stern is a 9-month program for seed-stage science and deep technology startups, and also a completely relevant and on message sponsor. Founders receive intensive mentorship from serial entrepreneurs, access to leading investors, technical advice from top scientists, and execution support from Stern MBAs. Apply now. Application deadline is August 12th.
As many of you know, my 100 year old Nana had become something of a fixture on my social media through the #nanavideos hashtag.
I'm deeply saddened to share that she passed away in her sleep on Friday morning. Needless to say, I'm pretty devastated--like I lost my best friend.
At the same time, I feel tremendously lucky to have spent as much time with her as I did. When my grandfather passed away 22 years ago, I felt like I should be really intentional about trying to make the most of what little time I might have with her as possible. I got all the time I could have possibly wished for.
Everyday I wear the ring my grandmother gave him for their 50th wedding anniversary and now I carry both of their memories with it.
Going back through these videos has been a great consolation to me and I can't encourage you enough to break out your phones and do the same--sit down with your families and record as much as you can.
The other thing I've done is to pull my old VHS tapes and convert the videos to digital. I found this little converter box on Amazon and it works brilliantly if you have a VCR. VHS tapes don't last forever and you'll watch all this stuff 100x more if you can just pull it out on your phone anytime you want to go back.
Yesterday wasn't an easy Mother's Day for our family--but I hope you all had very happy ones. Seemed like it, as Mother's Day is probably the best Instagram day of the year.
A recent web development bootcamp friend of mine recently won a Startup Bus tournament by successfully deploying a blockchain app. She's probably the most enthusiastic and energetic learner I know and is super hungry for a junior development position, especially in anything having to do with blockchain. She doesn't have full time commercial development experience yet, but she's got some interesting projects under her belt. I personally guarantee that you will not find someone who will work harder and longer to learn. Let me know if I can make an intro regarding open positions.
If this rain doesn't stop, you might need to learn how to kayak. There's no better way than by volunteering at the Brooklyn Bridge Park Boathouse this summer--and we need volunteers! Newbies to kayaking very welcome. Just sign up to our volunteer newsletter for details.
Good luck at the Brooklyn Half next Saturday! Tweet at me for a mention in next week's newsletter or to just say hi at the finish.

We also wanted to create something that featured extraordinary talents of younger people. We approached the “Face the Music” program at the Kaufman Music Center in Manhattan. “Face the Music” is the only youth orchestra in the country dedicated to music by living composers. We agreed to create an interactive VR marketing piece that they could use to promote their program to students and music teachers across the country. We decided to use Wonda VR to add interactivity. 06:30PM - No Special Snowflakes: Disposable Infrastructure in Kubernetes Continuous Delivery : NYC Shopkeep 460 Park Avenue South - New York, NY Lyft is in the midst of a transition from a legacy, mutate-in-place deployment stack to one based on immutable containers on top of Kubernetes. Our existing infrastructure makes heavy use of daemons to provide a consistent platform relied upon by over 500 engineers. In a containerized environment, side-car containers allow you to compose these infrastructure dependencies with clean abstractions. However, traditional methods of side-car infrastructure deployments can leave wide variance in what is actually running in production with poor automation and controls. To combat this, we’re embracing disposable infrastructure to ensure we can perform updates to common infrastructure on hundreds of microservices in a safe and consistent manner.-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Speakers Yann Ramin is the technical lead for the Deploys team at Lyft, where he leads efforts in all things continuous delivery, providing tools and services to enable Lyft engineers to build world class systems. Few design systems are built on a blank slate though, we’re often working with hundreds of lines of code and years of design debt before we even begin, so it takes time to deliver on that promise. This talk will take us on a journey into working with color in design systems—one of the most contentious and critical elements of design. From human perception to programmatically generating colors, we'll take a look at the work involved in building design systems from a colorful perspective.Diana is a designer based in Brooklyn, NY. She specializes in design systems, and has a background in user-centered design. She currently works at GitHub and leads their design systems team - the team responsible for building and maintaining, Primer.
