NEWS AND NOTES

Happy new year! If you need a resolution, we recommend "eat more nachos." You win either way. We personally resolve to do more with Instagram in 2016. Such as ...

Win Comedy Kumite tickets: The world's greatest stand-up comedy tournament returns to the Improv on January 16. Eight great local comics will compete in Comedy Kumite IV, and you can win two tickets by competing in our Instagram contest. All you have to do is leave the funniest caption on the photo of Van Damme in our Instagram feed. We'll announce the winner on 12/31. And be sure to follow us on Instagram for more caption contests in the future!

Free in January: We've got our full slate of no-cover events this month. Trivia night is on 1/7 (Thursday). Open mic night is on 1/21 (Thursday). And the Make Up Party game night is on 1/22 (Friday). Check out dcimprov.com for details.

MadTV reunion: On 1/12, the CW will air a 20th anniversary special for "MadTV" that gets the band back together -- including Aries Spears, who'll be headlining the Improv this June. Check out the reunion special, then come see Aries live this summer.

New Shows: Jive Turkey and Friends (2/5), DC Showcase (2/6), Vir Das (3/11), Aries Spears (6/23)

NYE with Orny Adams

Orny Adams

December 31 (Th) The best way to greet 2016 is by laughing right in its face. We've got Orny on our stage, dinner specials on the menu (for the early show) and a two-decade tradition of throwing great New Year's Eve parties. Plus, anyone coming to a NYE show gets a special pass for admission to another Improv show in 2016. Tickets are $70 for the early show, $75 for the late show.

January 1-2 (Fr-Sa) If you're laying low on NYE, you can still start 2016 on a high note. Orny will be sticking around to headline Friday and Saturday. Since appearing in the documentary "Comedian" with Jerry Seinfeld, Orny has toured the world, landed acting gigs (he's on MTV's "Teen Wolf") and perfected his own brand of sharp observational comedy. Tickets: $20 all shows

Murder Mystery Comedy Show

The Last Laugh

January 7 (Th) We've got a 187 on 1/7 ... The Last Laugh is an interactive murder mystery show starring comedians and radio personalities from DC and Baltimore. It starts with a roast of movie star Jim Marsdale (98 Rock's Justin Schlegel), gets interrupted by a murder, then finishes with the audience helping to solve the crime.

The guys at Die Laughing Productions started doing these shows in the back half of 2015, and they've been building a ton of momentum performing all around the DMV. We love it when people kill on stage, so we're happy to welcome them for their DC Improv debut.

Tickets: $17

DCI DEBUT

Brent Morin

Brent Morin

February 3-6 (Th-Su) At the start of December, Brent's first one-hour comedy special started streaming on Netflix. It was the latest milestone for Brent, who is shaping up to be one of the comedy stars of the next decade.

He started out as a production assistant for Conan O'Brien's talk show. His work as a stand-up turned into a gig on NBC's "Undateable," which is currently in the middle of a bold season of live-broadcast episodes. And we can all agree that the crowning moment of his young career will be headlining the DC Improv in the week leading up to the Super Bowl. This should be a great show -- when Brent came through on the "Undateable" tour in 2014, he had an amazingly entertaining set. We can't wait to see what he does with 45 minutes.

Tickets: $20 all shows

CROWD WORK

Big Jay Oakerson

Big Jay Oakerson

February 18-21 (Th-Su) Comedy Central knows what’s up, so in July 2015 they gave Jay a live radio show. “The Bonfire” is another venue for Jay’s brutal and hilarious honesty. His stand-up includes crazy stories from his rock-n-roll lifestyle, lots of top-shelf crowd work and fearless looks at relationships, drugs and other recreational activities. He made his DC Improv headlining debut in 2015, and he’s back for another round in the new year.

But don't take our word for it. Jay is one of Dave Attell's favorite comics ... and Dave is one of the best club comics of all time. If you're a fan of the art of stand-up comedy, this is definitely a show worth seeing.

Tickets: $15 Thursday/Sunday, $17 Friday/Saturday
