PLUS: Planning ahead for Valentine's weekend

The DC Improv

1140 Connecticut Ave. NW, WDC 20036

You really only have two entertainment options this winter: The DC Improv, or "The Revenant." We promise 100 percent less bear attacks at our shows, or your money back. Also, we added four "one night only" shows to our schedule -- a "black-ish" star, a Mexican-American YouTube phenom, a murder mystery and a medium. Check the teasers below for more info.

Win Comedy Kumite tickets (January 16): The world's greatest stand-up tournament returns to the DC Improv lounge this Saturday. The early show sold out, so we just added a 10 p.m. show. If you want to win two tickets to the late show, check out our Instagram feed and enter our caption contest -- look for the photo of Apollo Creed and leave a funny caption in the comments. (Stay classy, FWIW.) We'll announce the winner on Friday -- and be sure to follow us on Instagram for more contests in the future.

Live Podcasts: We're hoping to do more live podcast tapings in 2016, and we're off to a fine start ... last week we announced that Sarah Fraser's "Hey Frase" show would be in our lounge 1/29, and the tickets were gone within three hours. If you've got a favorite podcast that you want to see up close, send a suggestion to ... it can't hurt to ask.

Funniest President: Bill Clinton? Speaking of podcasts, in 2016 we're using ours to choose the funniest president of all time. We're talking to historians, comedy writers, enthusiasts and more to find out which presidents could take a joke and make a joke. The first episode went online this week. It focuses on Bill Clinton, and our guest is former Clinton speechwriter Mark Katz. If you love politics, history or comedy, follow along.

New Shows: Hey Frase podcast (1/29), Rahmein Mostafavi (1/30), Deon Cole (2/5), Murder mystery (4/14), Chingo Bling (4/20), Medium Cindy Kaza (5/4)

John Heffron

John Heffron

January 14-17 (Th-Su) Please note: Saturday 7:30 show is already sold out!

A few years back, John wrote "I Come to You From the Future" -- a book filled with honest and hilarious advice from a middle-class guy who's seen a few things. That's the perspective that makes his high-energy stand-up so great. He looks at the highs and lows of life, and he puts himself out there in a way that millions of comedy fans relate to. (Don't forget, this is the guy who won "Last Comic Standing 2.") We welcome him back to our stage in 2016, along with feature act Herbie Gill and emcee Josh Kuderna.

Tickets: $17 Thursday/Sunday, $20 Friday/Saturday

Tom Papa

January 22-24 (F-Su) Special event! Please note: The Saturday 7:30 show is already sold out, and the Saturday 9:45 is more than 80 percent full.

Tom’s a master of observational comedy, laying out his side of the story with a mix of exasperation and amusement. (Consider the company he keeps -- he's one of Jerry Seinfeld's favorite touring partners.) Respected by people throughout the entertainment industry – everyone from Steven Soderbergh to Rob Zombie is a fan – he has landed gigs as an actor and a game show host. He’s also in charge of “Come to Papa,” a podcast and radio program that features top-notch comedic and celebrity guests.

Tickets: $20 all shows

Deon Cole / Newly Dead Game / Chingo Bling / Cindy Kaza

Deon Cole  Newly Dead Game  Chingo Bling  Medium Cindy Kaza

Four one-nighters were added to our calendar in the last week -- and they couldn't be more different:

February 5 (F): Deon Cole. He's getting ready to record a one-hour special, and this 11:30 show is his last "tune up" -- and your best chance to see Deon up close. I mean, you COULD sit four inches from the TV when watching "black-ish," but this will be way better. Tickets: $20

April 14 (Th): Murder Mystery. The guys from Die Laughing Productions sold out the club on 1/7 with one of their murder mystery comedy shows. They're back in April with another -- and this one is called "The Newly Dead Game." Tickets: $17

April 20 (W): Chingo Bling. A DC Improv debut! Chingo Bling is a rapper, comic, actor and social media superstar. His albums and YouTube clips, which celebrate and have fun with the Mexican-American experience, are wildly popular. Now he's doing a live stand-up tour. Tickets: $20

May 4 (W): Medium Cindy Kaza. We did two shows with Cindy in 2015, and she'll be back at the club this spring. If you want to learn more about how her shows work, check out our podcast. She loves explaining what she does. Tickets: $20

Christian Finnegan

Christian Finnegan

February 11-14 (Th-Su) There is just one constant across all cultures: Christian Finnegan tickets make a great Valentine's Day gift. Seriously, they have found cave art depicting two people making out after hearing Christian talk about the Metro. Jewelry eventually gets pawned to cover gambling debts, but memories of a Christian Finnegan show last forever.

We love Christian, and he loves performing in DC -- he recorded one of his albums (Two for Flinching) on our stage. Whether you're with a date, with friends or flying solo, you're going to leave the club in a good mood.

Tickets: $17 Thursday/Sunday, $20 Friday/Saturday (Two shows Sunday night)

Brandon T. Jackson

Brandon T. Jackson

February 26-28 (Fr-Su) We've got a bunch of DC Improv debuts in the first half of 2016, and Brandon is one of them. Movie fans know who he is. Among other roles, Brandon played Alpa Chino in "Tropic Thunder," he has been in the Percy Jackson series, and he even laced up the skates for "Roll/Bounce." On the small screen, he's gonna be in the upcoming Esquire series "Comedians of LA," alongside DeRay Davis and some other stars.

Brandon grew up in Detroit, where his family started in the inner city and wound up in the suburbs. He talks about both worlds in his act.

Tickets: $20 Friday/Saturday, $17 Sunday

March 31-April 3 (Th-Su) This week we've got the "Last Comic Standing" champ from 2004. In early spring, we've got the LCS champ from 2015.

Clayton (an Atlanta native) went up against some extremely talented people and came out on top; he then went on the LCS nationwide tour. Now he's making his way around the country again, headlining clubs and showing people more of what he can do.

Tickets: $20 Thursday/Sunday, $22 Friday/Saturday
