PLUS: Valentine's weekend made easy

The DC Improv

1140 Connecticut Ave. NW, WDC 20036

Happy Groundhog Day! Here's hoping that encounters with your personal Ned Ryerson go smoothly. Tons of stuff to tell you about, so let's get to it:

Valentine's Weekend: This is your last heads up before judgment day ... aka Valentine's. We've got Christian Finnegan headlining (two shows on Sunday, February 14), and we DON'T have a prix fixe menu at $75 a head. So you'll probably have extra money to spend on chocolate-covered roses, etc. That weekend we're also hosting a few workshops by author/publicist Kambri Crews - including a two-hour crash course on public relations on February 13. If you've ever wondered how to promote anything you're involved with, from a creative project to your own business, Kambri will be sharing some tips.

NEW SHOWS: Make Up Party (2/12), Commedia dell Media (2/25), Beltway Pundits (3/4), Freestyle Funny (4/10), Loni Love (6/10), Bobby Slayton (6/10), Chris D'Elia (6/15)

Pun competition: In one month, the DC Improv is hosting Beltway Pundits, our first ever pun competition. Everyone has that one friend who can't resist puns, and this is their time to shine -- this competition is open to all comers. There are two ways to plaBy. You can prep a pun-filled speech in advance or you can try your luck in the Punger Games tournament at the end of the night. All the details are on, and so are the links to register. (It's just $5.)

Funniest journalist: On February 25, we're playing host to "Commedia dell Media," the contest to find the funniest journalist in Washington. It's a charity event, with proceeds supporting the work of journalists trying to cover the story in Syria. An excellent cause ... details are right here.

Funniest President / new podcasts: Good things are happening on the (totally free) DC Improv podcast, The Other Side. We're now four episodes into "Headliner of State," our quest to find the funniest president of all time. We're talking to authors, historians, politicos, comedy writers and more - next week, we've got Patric Verrone of "Futurama" chatting about Nixon. If you're a fan of comedy, history or politics, hop on board. Also, we've got a new interview with Ms. Pat, who headlines the club February 18-21. Her up-from-poverty story is amazing, and this is our way of introducing her.

February 3-6 (W-Sa) Please note that the Saturday 7:30 show is already sold out.

Last week, NBC wrapped the third (and all live!) season of "Undateable," the show that has cemented Brent's status as a comedy star. He's not slowing down. Brent is going from the Warner Brothers lot straight to the road, and the DC Improv is his first stop.

As a stand-up, Brent's got tons of charisma and great delivery -- the show is a lot of fun, start to finish. (Check out his new Netflix special and you'll see what we mean.) You don't have to wait for the Super Bowl to party ... join us for Brent's DC Improv headlining debut!

Valentine's with Christian Finnegan

Christian Finnegan

February 11-14 (Th-Su) Two shows Sunday night!

If we've learned one thing from years of reading Cosmo, it's a complete lack of shame. But if we've learned a second thing, it's that laughter keeps relationships going. The Improv is therefore the perfect Valentine's weekend destination, 'cuz we've got Christian Finnegan.

Christian is a pioneer of the "talking head" show, a sitcom actor, a Twitter all-star and one of our favorite stand-ups. (Plus he was the white guy in that famous "Real World" sketch on Chappelle's show, for good measure.) The Improv is one of his favorite rooms -- he recorded one of his albums here -- and we're confident that he'll make your Valentine's date a success. Assuming you don't screw it up with your OWN jokes, of course.

Tickets: $17 Thursday/Sunday, $20 Friday/Saturday

Vir Das

Vir Das

March 11-13 (F-Su) DC is an international city, so every now and then we luck out and get some international stars. Vir Das is one of the biggest comedy stars in India (he's got 1.38 million Twitter followers, if that's any indication). He's been popping up in hit comedy movies in his homeland, and he has sold a ridiculous number of tickets touring that part of the world as a stand-up comedian.

He's making a run through North America this winter, and we're his only stop on the East Coast. So this might be your best chance to see a guy who's getting to be a household name, in a country with one-sixth of the world’s households.

Tickets: $22 (limited $15 student tickets)

Freestyle Funny

Freestyle Funny

April 10 (Su) The guys from Freestyle Funny visited us twice in 2015. It was a blast each time, so they're back for 2016. The show features Brian “B Daht” McLaughlin, Anthony “Chico” Bean, Darren “Big Baby” Brand, and Demar “Osama Bin Drankin” Rankin. Three of those guys are on "Wild 'N Out," and all the energy you see on that show translates to the stage. You're getting stand-up, sketch and some interactive crowd games.

They perfected the format touring college for a few years, and it works great in a club -- this is definitely a sweet way to close out a weekend.

Tickets: $20

Loni Love

Loni Love

June 10-12 (F-Su) The last few years, Loni has used her charm to bust down all kinds of doors. She's our favorite co-host on the daytime talk show "The Real," and she's one of the stand-out guests on "Ellen." In fact, Ellen likes her so much that Loni will be hosting the new "Heads Up" game show Ellen is producing.

And amazingly enough, Loni still makes the time to bring her comedy straight to her fans. She got her start as a stand-up comic, and she's at her best in the clubs. She's got an instant connection with audiences and does a great job of sending people home happy. Loni is great on daytime TV, but she's even better live at night.

Chris D'Elia

Chris D'Elia

June 15-19 (W-Su) This is a long way off, but you might want to plan ahead. Chris can sell out theater-sized venues, so we're anticipating a ton of sold out shows.

Chris is in high demand as one of today’s most charismatic and energetic comedians. He was already an accomplished stand-up when he was cast as the male lead on “Whitney.” And the exposure from that show pushed his career into overdrive. In 2015 alone, he starred in the third season of "Undateable" (alongside this week's headliner Brent Morin), released a new Netflix special and appeared on Comedy Central’s hugely popular roast of Justin Bieber. This June, you can have a special treat: Seeing him up close at the club.

Tickets: $35 all shows
