NEWS AND NOTES

Alright, we don't actually have Trump, Freeeman or Barkley. But we do have Frank Caliendo, whose impressions of those guys are becoming legendary. He's back on our stage in July ... scroll down for details.

Best of DC: Today (March 1) is the last day of voting for Washington City Paper's "Best of DC" readers poll. We try to be a great comedy venue. If you think we're succeeding, please take a second and vote for us. We've won this title four times in a row, but we never take it for granted. Thanks for supporting the Improv and live comedy!

Best of DC

New Shows: Open Mic Night (3/10), Hey Frase (4/1), Jake Johannsen (6/2), DeRay Davis (6/30), Frank Caliendo (7/7), John Witherspoon (7/14)

Hey Frase taping (April 1): Following up on their hugely successful live podcast in January, Sarah Fraser and Samy K are coming back to our lounge April 1 for another go-round. They'll have another special guest and they'll be saying hi to the fans. Hey Frase started recording at the Improv a few months ago and we've loved having them in the building ... and Sarah and Samy are a lot of fun live. Just a heads up, this sold out in less than three hours last time, so if you want to go, buy your seats ASAP.

Free in March: For all you cheap ... uh, we mean "frugal" people, we've got our full slate of free-admission events coming your way in March. The next open mic night is March 10, the next Make Up Party game night is March 11, and Happy Hour Trivia is on March 25.

Funniest President: Big news in our quest to find the funniest president of all time! Next week (3/7), we'll be chatting about President Obama with Brad Jenkins and David Litt -- two former White House staffers who now work for Funny Or Die's office here in DC. In the meantime, you can check out our interview with Ulysses S. Grant -- that's right, we actually talked to U.S. Grant. Jealous?

Win Flip Orley tickets for Sunday: Wanna score two tix to see our favorite hypnotist this Sunday? Go to our Instagram feed and look for the photo we uploaded today of Flip. Comment on that picture with a funny caption, and if we like yours best, we'll contact you through Instagram to let you know you won. (Keep it classy, folks.)

THIS WEEK

Hypnotist Flip Orley

Flip Orley

March 3-6 (Th-Su) No one has headlined more shows at the DC Improv, for a great reason: No two Flip Orley shows can ever be the same. Flip brings volunteers on stage, then uses hypnotic suggestions to get them acting and reacting in ways that have to be seen to be believed. Depending on the night, an audience member might learn an alien language, forget their own name, gain a superpower or burst into song. Flip never humiliates his volunteers, and he never disappoints a crowd. Because the comedy comes from friends and family, it's often an unforgettable night on the town.

Please note that the Friday and Saturday late shows start at 10 p.m. (not the usual start time of 9:45). The early show Saturday is sold out, and the late show Saturday has 30 seats left at the time of this message.

Tickets: $17 Thursday/Sunday, $19 Friday/Saturday

LOUNGIN'

Pun Contest / Kumite / Showcases

Beltway Pundits

We've got a lot happening in BOTH our showrooms in the next few weeks. Here's a rundown of what's happening in our 60-seat lounge:

March 4 (F) The Beltway Pundits pun competition is at 7:30 this Friday, and admission/registration is open to anyone. The people who love puns REALLY love 'em ... if you're in that category, this is your time to shine. All the competition info is at dcimprov.com, and we recommend snagging a seat in advance. It's filling up. Tickets: $5

March 5 (Sa) Comedy Kumite is the Improv's signature stand-up comedy tournament, and it's back for a fifth edition on Saturday. The early show is already sold out, but tickets are available for the 10 p.m. show. You'll see eight excellent local comics competing in a bracketed tournament -- so whoever you like best, you can cheer them on to the next round and more stage time. Tickets: $17

March 11-12 (Fr-Sa) Next weekend we've got different "DC Comedy Showcases" on each night. The shows feature five different performers from the DC/Baltimore scene. It's a great way to see new faces up close. Tickets: $17

NEXT WEEK

Vir Das

Vir Das

March 11-13 (F-Su) Vir Das is already a comedy star in his homeland of India -- he has appeared in all kinds of hit movies and done record-breaking stand-up tours. In fact, he's been one of the key figures in launching India's stand-up scene. A few weeks ago, he hopped on a plane and kicked off his second North American tour, and the DC Improv will be his exclusive stop on the East Coast.

The buzz we're hearing from his West Coast appearances is great. This is a chance to see an international star on the rise ...

Tickets: $22 general admission / $15 student (limited)

JAKE THIS

Jake Johannsen

Jake Johannsen

June 2-5 (Th-Su) Last Year, Jake Johannsen made his final appearance on David Letterman's talk show ... which gave him the all-time record for "Late Night" stand-up sets. It's not hard to understand why Jake was one of Dave's favorites. He has a style unlike anyone else working today – his show is a non-stop stream of jokes and observations on almost any imaginable topic, all held together by goofy, warped and hilarious logic. It's brilliantly written, and delivered in a way that only Jake can do. If you love the art of stand-up, you gotta see him live.

Tickets: $17 Thursday/Sunday, $20 Friday/Saturday

HOTTER THAN JULY

DeRay Davis

DeRay Davis

June 30-July 3 (Th-Su) Last year we had DeRay on our stage for the first time, and he sold out something like nine or 10 shows. It was one of the hottest live acts we saw all year; the guy knows how to get a whole room doubling over in laughter.

He's still in the middle of a comedy rampage. DeRay, who really took off as a star on MTV's "Wild 'N Out," now hosts "Joking Off" on MTV2. He'll also be featured in the new "Living With Funny" docu-series that debuts on Oxygen at the end of March. (Michael Blackson and Brandon T. Jackson are also part of that show.) Plus, he's still touring as a stand-up, so you get a second crack at seeing him on our stage this summer. The tickets are gonna move, so plan ahead ...

Tickets: $35 Thursday, $39 Friday/Saturday

TRUMP, FREEMAN and BARKLEY?

Frank Caliendo

Frank Caliendo

July 7-9 (Th-Sa) Quite frankly, you already know Frank -- and the dozens of celebrities, politicians and sports stars that he impersonates flawlessly (like the people we listed to tease this e-mail). Frank's skills as a comedian and impressionist are legendary. Millions of people saw his work on "MADtv," Fox’s football coverage, and now ESPN. And for years, he has entertained fans around the world with a live show that’s fast-paced, family-friendly and hilarious.

This July, he's bringing his show back to the DC Improv for three nights. To quote Frank quoting Morgan Freeman, "I find I'm so excited, I can barely sit still or hold a thought in my head ..."

Tickets: $35 Thursday/Friday, $39 Saturday
