NEWS AND NOTES

Friendly reminder: This week is the start of new Metro hours, with train service ending at midnight. Most weekends, our late shows are done by 11:30, which in theory leaves enough time to walk to Farragut North or Farragut West for the last train. But if you don't want to chance it, either snag tix for the early show or use one of the parking garages nearby.

TONIGHT (June 1): Hey Frase with Omarosa. Sarah Fraser and Samy K are doing their podcast in front of a live audience in our main showroom tonight. Their special guests are Omarosa (of Trump and "Apprentice" fame) and style maven Paul Wharton. Gonna be a lot of fun, and some general admission tickets are still available: Here's the link for tickets.

Family-friendly show this Saturday: ComedySportz is back in our lounge this Saturday. It's a clean improv comedy show, and we lift the Improv's usual age limit so you can bring your kids if you like. (But you do have to be 18 to attend the 9:45 "Late Night Improv" show.) If you've never been to see short form improv, it's what the do on "Whose Line." The shows are fast-paced, interactive and a lot of fun. Here's the link for ComedySportz tickets.

Summer School: If you're looking for a new experience this summer, but a trip to Bermuda isn't in the budget, try a beginning improv class. It's a great way to meet new people, share a few laughs and get a sense of what it's like to perform on stage. Most of our improv classes are five or six weeks, meeting once per week. We have one Beginning Improv class starting at the end of June, and two more starting in July. Here's the full course catalog.

New Shows: Comedy School Showcase (7/8), DMV Showcase (7/9), Comedy Kumite 7 (8/12), Beltway Pundits (8/18)

THIS WEEK

Jake Johannsen

Jake Johannsen

June 2-5 (Th-Su) Summer's here, but with DC's traffic you probably don't want to risk dancing in the streets.

Instead, party indoors with Jake Johannsen. Jake is simply one of the best when it comes to the art of stand-up comedy. He found his quirky, original voice early in his career, built an incredible library of material and starting touring the country. Every year he brings something new to our stage -- over the years he appeared on David Letterman's shows 46 different times, always performing stand-up. That's the record.

Jake will be joined by feature act Rahmein Mostafavi and emcee Chris White. Should be a great start to the season ... Share with friends on Facebook

Tickets: $17 Thursday/Sunday, $20 Friday/Saturday

JB Smoove

JB Smoove

June 10-11 (Fr-Sa) You people aren't curbing your enthusiasm. We put tickets for JB's shows on sale just two weeks ago, and we're already sold out for Saturday. Friday isn't far behind, so if you want to see JB, you'll need to act sooner rather than later.

JB has been more than a little busy since the last time we saw him, in 2013. He hosted "Last Comic Standing" a few years back, had a great role in "The Millers" on CBS and showed up on the big screen as Chris Rock's assistant / bodyguard in "Top Five." If we're going back a little further, tons of people remember him as Leon on "Curb Your Enthusiasm." Share with friends on Facebook

NEXT WEEK: STAND-UP LEGEND

Bobby Slayton

Bobby Slayton

June 10-11 (Fr-Sa) Next weekend we've got a special treat for the lounge showroom, as Bobby Slayton takes over the space on Friday and Saturday.

Comedy club regulars know that Bobby is a legend -- his growling voice and scathing insult comedy have earned him the nickname "The Pitbull of Comedy." He delivers jokes and verbal abuse at a breakneck pace that's hard to believe. We’re excited to have him in a 60-seat showroom that’s ideal for his brand of comedy – in an environment that intimate, no one will be safe. It's gonna be a blast. Share with friends on Facebook

THREE WEEKS AWAY

Aries Spears

Aries Spears

June 23-26 (Th-Su) Aries impersonated family members at the dinner table when he was a kid. He was on stage at comedy clubs by the time he was a teenager, and before he hit 20 he launched a career in show business that’s still going strong. Aries is famous for his long run on “Mad TV,” which showcased his amazing ability to mimic and mock celebrities. (He appeared on the anniversary special earlier this year.) His live show is quick, confident and aggressive – and it’s still highlighted by spot-on impressions of sports and entertainment stars. Please note: There are three shows on Saturday (7, 9 and 11). In fact, Frank can do a great impression of just about anyone. Millions of people know him from his work on “MADtv,” Fox’s football coverage, and now ESPN. He has entertained fans around the world with a live show that’s fast-paced, family-friendly and hilarious – and this July, he’s bringing it back to the DC Improv. Share with friends on Facebook

A VISIT FROM POPS

John Witherspoon

John Witherspoon

July 14-17 (Th-Su) John has been in the game for a long time. Back in the day he was sharing stages with David Letterman while working the New York stand-up scene. By the mid-1980s, he was a stand-up star. A new generation got to know him through TV and movies. He was "Pops" on the "The Wayans Bros.," and he did  unforgettable work playing Ice Cube's father in all the "Friday" movies. Fans of Adult Swim know him as the granddad on "The Boondocks" and for his role on "Black Jesus."

But he always keeps coming back to stand-up. We get a visit from Pops just about every year, and it's a highlight for us. Great guy, great show. Share with friends on Facebook
