NEWS AND NOTES

Happy summer, everyone. Over the next few weeks we have a lineup of monster headliners: Chris D'Elia (Undateable), Aries Spears (MADtv), DeRay Davis, Frank Caliendo, John Witherspoon, Gary Owen ...

And the Star Wars star? That's hometown hero Judah Friedlander, who is now on our October calendar. Details beow.

One other fun thing to note: Roy Wood Jr. was named one of Variety's 10 Comics to Watch for 2016. They put the list out every year and it's a very cool honor. We'll have Roy closing out our summer, with shows Labor Day Weekend.

Summer School: It's not to late to sign up for one of our beginning improv classes, if you're looking to take your summer up a notch. These classes meet once a week, usually for five or six weeks. There are still a few slots in the classes starting on July 10 and on July 23. Here's the full course catalog.

Capital Pride: As part of pride month celebrations, we've got Karen Williams doing a show in our lounge on June 24 (a Friday night). Karen was the first "out" black woman comic, and her opening act is style guru Paul Wharton. All the details are on dcimprov.com.

New Shows: wellRED Tour (6/29), ComedySportz (7/16), Open Mic (7/20), Tony Roberts (7/28), Trivia Night (8/10), Sommore (9/30), Judah Friedlander (10/6)

THIS WEEK

Chris D'Elia

Chris D'Elia

June 15-19 (W-Su) Chris is one of the hottest tickets on the comedy circuit right now. His energetic, freewheeling stand-up helped him land some big-time TV jobs -- after serving as the male lead on "Whitney," he was the star of "Undateable," which aired on NBC for three seasons. (The third season was entirely live episodes, and one of Chris' co-stars, Ron Funches, will be here in August.) His TV work didn't keep him from stand-up, though. His Netflix special "Incorrigible" came out in 2015, and he's once again making his way around the country so fans can see him in person.

These shows are Chris' DC Improv headlining debut, and they're gonna be crowded. The original seven shows are already sold out, so all the tickets left are for Friday 11, Saturday 11 and Sunday 9. Share with friends on Facebook

Aries Spears

Aries Spears

June 23-26 (Th-Su) A few months ago they announced that "MADtv" is coming back ... and we've got one of its original stars here to close out June. Aries was on screen week after week with fantastic impressions and original characters. He first started developing his comedy skills at the dinner table when he was a kid. He was on stage at comedy clubs by the time he was a teenager, and before he hit 20 he launched a career in show business that’s still going strong.

His stand-up is quick, confident and aggressive – and it’s still highlighted by spot-on impressions of sports and entertainment stars. Please note: We're already sold out for the 7 and 9 p.m. shows on Saturday, but there are tickets available for Saturday 11 p.m.

wellRED Comedy Tour

wellRED

June 29 (W) Got a mid-week special coming your way in a few weeks. The wellRED Comedy Tour features stand-up from "Liberal Redneck" Trae Crowder, Corey Ryan Forrester and Dave Morgan. They're writing partners with a bunch of viral videos to their names, and this summer they decided to take the show on the road.

If you like your politics to the left, and your jokes delivered with a Southern twang, you should definitely check this out. And plan ahead ... we put this on sale last week, and they're already more than halfway to a sold out show. These guys have got some fans. Share with friends on Facebook

TRANSFORM AND ROLL OUT

Tony Roberts

Tony Roberts

July 28-31 (Th-Su) If you're hawking our schedule, then you know Jerrod Carmichael was set for the end of July. Then, Jerrod decided to take a part in the new Transformers movie, which apparently films all summer. So we did our part and transformed Jerrod into Tony Roberts.

Tony was one of our favorite new faces from 2015; he took a weekend of work on short notice and blew us away. He's a great natural performer who brings a lot of energy and positivity to the stage. Some people know Tony from "Mr. Box Office," where he starred alongside Bill Bellamy. Other people might have spotted him in the first episode of the new "Uncle Buck" with Mike Epps. But you definitely want to know him from his stand-up comedy. Trust us on this one. Share with friends on Facebook

JUST ADDED

Sommore

Sommore

September 30-October2 (Fr-Su) We just had JB Smoove at the club for the first time in three years. Now we're going even further back ... for the first time since 2010, Sommore will grace our stage!

The "Queen of Comedy" has been at it since the '90s. She did a trailblazing turn as the first female host of the legendary BET show "Comic View," participated in a bunch of national stand-up tours and wrote and produced two of her own stand-up specials. In her spare time, she also popped up in some cult classics such as "Friday After Next" and "Soul Plane." Should be great to have her back ... Share with friends on Facebook

LOCAL BOY MAKES GOOD

Judah Friedlander

Judah Friedlander

October 6-8 (Th-Sa) Every great hero has an origin story. As it so happens, the story of Judah Friedlander began in Montgomery County.

Coming out of the DC burbs, Judah became the World Champion ... of everything. His unforgettable on-stage character got him a lot of attention, and led to some pretty cool movie gigs. (He was great in "American Splendor," "Wet Hot American Summer" and, of course, "Sharknado 2.") He also had a great run playing Frank on "30 Rock."

And as for "Star Wars": Judah was in "The Force Awakens," for about 2 seconds. He was one of the guys at the bar when Han Solo walked in. Most analysts believe Judah is the main reason the movie made more than a billion dollars.

Judah continues to dominate the comedy world, and this October he should also be wrapping up his campaign for president of the world. Come to the club and support a hometown hero! Share with friends on Facebook
