The DC Improv

The theme this time is value -- we've got excellent shows the next few weeks that won't bust your budget. If you need something to do tonight (Wednesday), we're running the "Five for $5" showcase, and about 35 seats are still available as we write this. Tony Roberts ($20) is in our main showroom Thursday through Sunday, and next week hypnotist Flip Orley is back ($17-$19). All of those shows should be straight-up fun. At the very least, we promise they're better than standing outside in 95-degree heat.

Comedy at President Lincoln's Cottage: When Abe Lincoln wanted to relax, he went to a cottage in DC a few miles north of the White House. He spent a quarter of his presidency there. Now YOU can relax at the cottage. The Improv is proud to collaborate with Lincoln's Cottage for the Two Faces Comedy Series: Three shows that take place inside the very building where the Emancipation Proclamation took shape. Lincoln was one of our funniest presidents and loved to laugh, so this is a cool way to connect with history. The first show is August 17 (a Wednesday) and features Rahmein Mostafavi, Kasha Patel and Tok Moffat. Click here for information and tickets.

Pun Contest: Our "Beltway Pundits" competition is back for a third time August 18. If you love puns, this is your time to shine ... you can either prepare a short pun-filled speech and deliver it on stage, or square off in a spur-of-the-moment pun battle. It's only $5 to either compete or watch. PUN UP OR SHUT UP.

New Shows: Stand-up Graduation Show (8/10), "Hey Frase" podcast late show (8/13), Open Mic Night (8/24), ComedySportz improv (8/27), Dave Siegel (9/30)

Tony Roberts

Tony Roberts

July 28-31 (Th-Su) A motor mouth from the Motor City, Tony puts on one hell of a show. We were blown away by his headlining weekend in 2015 and we can't wait to see what he's got in store this year. (You can check out our podcast with Tony from last year at this link.)

Tony is probably most famous for his work as a stand-up, but you've heard him as a regular on the Steve Harvey Morning Show. On the small screen, he starred opposite Bill Bellamy in "Mr. Box Office," and with Mike Epps in the recent summer series "Uncle Buck." He's got a great, positive energy. Check him out -- you won't regret it. Tell friends on Facebook

Hypnotist Flip Orley

Flip Orley

August 4-7 (Th-Su) Going to see Flip is like watching your favorite jam band. You know all the songs, but they're going to be different every time. Once some audience members are "under" the suggestions begin. Working as a comedic hypnotist for more than two decades, Flip has perfected scenarios that produce amazing responses, and you will be stunned by how funny volunteers can be once their imaginations are unlocked and their inhibitions are gone.

Whether you're on the stage as a volunteer or watching from the crowd, it might be a night at the club you'll never forget. Hey, there's a reason this guy has headlined multiple weeks a year for more than two decades ... Tell friends on Facebook

Ron Funches

Ron Funches

August 25-28 (Th-Su) Need to smile today? Check out this video of Ron Funches dancing. He's one of the voices in the upcoming movie "Trolls," so they worked him into Justin Timberlake's video for "Can't Stop the Music."

And though Ron clearly was meant to be a professional dancer, he's even better at comedy. Thanks to his trademark giggle and unique delivery, he's practically unforgettable -- he has become a favorite guest on "@midnight," he starred alongside Chris D'Elia and Brent Morin in "Undateable," and he has been a knockout on shows such as Conan. Ron made his DC Improv headlining debut in 2015, so close out your summer by welcoming him back to our stage. Tell friends on Facebook

Dave Attell

Dave Attell

September 16-18 (Fr-Su) A little personal note: The guy writing this newsletter first set foot in the DC Improv more than 15 years ago, just to see Dave Attell. Back then, Dave was already known as one of the best stand-up comedians, with a fearless attitude, just the right level of raunch, and razor sharp writing.

Today, Dave is still one of the best. He's had other projects over the years ("Insomniac" being the most loved) but he always thinks of himself as a stand-up comedian first. He always comes back to the stage, and he always puts on a great show. We all know DC needs to be a little less uptight, and Dave is just the guy to get things started. Tell friends on Facebook

Lavell Crawford

Lavell Crawford

October 14-16 (Fr-Su) Lavell has always been known as a big guy, but a few months ago he went public with his desire to get healthier so he can be around for his wife and kid. So over the weekend, it was great to see reports that he already lost 120 pounds.

If you wanna congratulate him in person, he's back at the club in October. At any weight the guy is a fantastic performer. He sold out every show with us in 2015, including the Improv's first ever 4 p.m. matinee (an idea that worked so well we've used it a couple of times since then). The St. Louis native is also known for his appearances on "Last Comic Standing," and as the bodyguard Huell on "Breaking Bad." We're keeping our fingers crossed that the slimmed-down Lavell and Bill Burr show up on "Better Call Saul" next season. Tell friends on Facebook

Bob Marley

Bob Marley

November 17-20 (Th-Su) We've got great November traditions going at the Improv the last few years. Donnell Rawlings comes back to his hometown on Thanksgiving weekend, and Bob Marley comes down from Maine to enjoy our much warmer mid-November weather.

If you don't know Bob, you should. He's one of the great "regular guy" comics, with a physical delivery and an endless supply of material about his family and everyday life. (He once set the Guinness record for longest solo stand-up performance, and he did 17 straight hours without repeating a joke.) He also has a bit of a cult following from his role as a detective in "The Boondock Saints" -- which also stars Willem Dafoe and a pre-Walking-Dead Norman Reedus. Tell friends on Facebook
