NEWS AND NOTES

Happy fall, everyone. Let's all band together, and if we watch enough live comedy we can muscle through to the spring.

NEW SHOWS: Open Mic Night (9/15), Bentzen Ball shows (10/29), Comedy Hack Day (11/13), Tony Woods (12/22), Tom Rhodes (12/29), Sheryl Underwood (1/6)

NEW PODCASTS: Last week we had a chat with Roy Wood Jr. about the experience of being a road comic. And our search for the funniest president is taking a look at Dwight Eisenhower.

Last call for drinking stories! On September 29, we team up with DC Brau to host a contest to find a great drinking story. If you have one (and you want to tell it on stage for a shot at a great prize package), the deadline for submissions is 11:59 p.m. on Wednesday (September 7). Just send a one-paragraph version of your story to chris@dcimprov.com. We'll announce the finalists the next day. Here's all the info on the event.

Planning Holiday Parties. It's after Labor Day, so no wearing white, and it's time to start planning office holiday parties. The Improv is a great option ... if you plan ahead, you can bring a big group to a regular show (Hypnotist Flip Orley would be a great choice), or rent the space for a private event. Zap a message to info@dcimprov.com and we're happy to chat.

Comedy Hack Day. This year we're hosting the finals of Comedy Hack Day DC on November 13. It's a cool event that matches tech guys with comedians for a weekend, so they can design apps and websites with a funny side. The grand presentations are on a Sunday night and it's just $10 to join the fun. If you're anywhere in the tech space, you should definitely check it out ...

THIS WEEK

Red Grant

Red Grant

September 9-11 (Fr-Su) Local boy makes good ... Born and raised in Washington, DC, Red has gone to heights many performers can only dream of, doing things that few comics have done since Robert Townsend. Getting his start at the Apollo Theatre and HBO’s Def Comedy Jam in 1996, Red is known for his contagious laugh and appearances in "American Hustle" (next to Katt Williams), "First Sunday" and "Martin Lawrence First Amendment." Red's style? “Real, raw comedy.” He was through DC earlier this year touring with Katt, and now he's back to headline the DC Improv for the first time. Tell friends on Facebook

Please note: There are less than 60 seats left for each Saturday show.

Tickets: $20 Friday/Saturday, $17 Sunday

NEXT WEEK

Dave Attell

Dave Attell

September 16-18 (Fr-Su) Please note: Three of the five shows (Friday 9:45 and both Saturday shows) are already sold out.

What more do we really need to say about Dave? He built his following the old fashioned way: He earned it. Starting in New York, he eventually took to the road, sharing his "very adult” comedy with audiences across the country. By the time Comedy Central signed him to do “Insomniac,” he was already one of the most popular touring stand-ups. Dave is still a presence on TV, “Comedy Underground” and appearances on the late night talk shows. And he continues to cement his status as one of the all-time great club comics. IN THE LOUNGE SHOWROOM

ComedySportz and Showcases

ComedySportz Lounge

September 10 (Sa) You have to be 18 to get into most shows at the Improv, but every month we try to have at least one exception. This Saturday, ComedySportz improv returns to our 60-seat lounge at 7:30, and it's all ages. Bring the kids if you want, 'cuz it's a clean show. (By law, we are also required to tell you that short-form improv is what you see on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?") Tickets are $15. Get them by clicking here.

September 16-17 (Fr-Sa) Next weekend we've got TWO showcases running in our 60-seat lounge. Friday night it's comedians from the DMV: Tok Moffat, Christopher Lawrence, Matty Litwack, Liz Miele and Kandace Saunders. Saturday night we've got comics from NYC making their way down I-95: Courtney Fearrington, Justy Dodge, Anthony Kapfer and Tim Dillon. Tickets for either showcase are $17 and you can get them by clicking here.

COLUMBUS DAY WEEKEND

Kumite Tournament of Champions

Kumite

October 9 (Su)  Last summer, we started up "comedy kumite" shows in our lounge. Each show is a one-night tournament featuring eight local stand-ups, with the audience picking the winners. It's a showcase for some of the best talent on the DMV scene.

Now we're bringing a Tournament of Champions to our main showroom! Past winners are returning to compete against each other, and this time the audience will decide the Grand Champion. Not to overhype this, but it's basically the stand-up Super Bowl, and World Series, and Stanley Cup, all rolled into one.

Your host for the evening is Dylan Meyer, and your competitors are Natalie McGill, Sean Savoy, Wendy Wroblewski, Rahmein Mostafavi, Matty Litwack, Jamel Johnson, Russ Green and Lafayette Wright. Tell friends on Facebook

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND

Deon Cole

Deon Cole

October 27-30 (Th-Su) This has been a banner year for Deon. He taped a new comedy special right here in DC last February, and it was released on Comedy Central a few months later. He starred in season two of "Angie Tribeca" on TBS, and he continued to be a big part of "Black-ish" on ABC. He also pops up all the time for segments on "Conan," where he used to be one of the strongest writers in late-night TV.

But no comedian's year would be complete without a headlining weekend at the DC Improv, right? We're closing out October with one of the funniest and most irreverent voices on the comedy scene. Tell friends on Facebook

Tickets: $25 Thursday/Sunday, $27 Friday/Saturday

IMPROV FAVORITE

Adam Ferrara

Adam Ferrara

November 3-6 (Th-Su) Adam has always had a blue collar vibe, but one of the coolest things about his shows is their theatrical quality. He's a great actor -- he had memorable roles in "Nurse Jackie" and "Rescue Me," among other projects. And he uses those talents as a stand-up to really draw the audience in as he shares the latest updates on his life. It's like you're hanging out with an old friend, who happens to be a TV star and is way funnier than anyone else you know. If you've never seen him before, we highly recommend it ... HOMETOWN HERO

Tony Woods

Tony Woods

December 22-23 (Th-Fr) Tony is a comedy legend 30 years in the making. He started telling jokes right here in DC, not far from the Improv at the old Comedy Cafe on K St. He developed a laid-back, seemingly effortless style, and he started using it to tell incredible, original stories. Tony's gift for on-stage performance has made him a "comedian's comedian," a guy who influences and is admired by every performer who sees him in action.

This December, he returns to the DC Improv stage to record a comedy special -- if you're in the crowd on Friday night, you'll be a part of comedy history. There's no one quite like Tony, so show some DC pride and watch him do his thing. Tell friends on Facebook
