WHAT'S NEW

It's spring again! We've got all our April headliners listed below. We also threw in some new shows for summer (like John Witherspoon!) for those who like to plan ahead.

After you're done reading this newsletter, go watch this Biz Markie video 20 times in a row. It'll get your head right.

This Wednesday / Next Wednesday: This week and next, we're getting you over the hump with Gabriel Iglesias' picks for our Next Wave series. On 3/29, Rick Gutierrez headlines and tickets are $15. On 4/5, Martin Moreno and Alfred Robles co-headline, and tickets are $17. All these guys tour with Fluffy, and he's personally recommending them to you ... check 'em out!

New Shows: DMV Showcase (3/31), Porkchop Volcano (4/20), Hey Frase podcast (5/12), ComedySportz events (5/13), Geek Night Comedy (6/16), Comedy Kumite X (6/17), Murder Mystery Comedy Show (6/21), John Witherspoon (7/13), Tony Rock (8/3), Next Wave: Novak and Laker (8/5)

Beginning Improv: We've got THREE sections of "beginning improv" class starting in April, if you're looking to try something new. It's truly a great way to enjoy a few laughs, break up your routine and meet a few new people. Get all the info at dcimprov.com.

The Time Machine Roast: We're trying something new in about month. A bunch of local comics are dressing up in costume, getting in character as famous people from history, then mocking the hell out of each other for 90 minutes. It's called the Time Machine Roast, tickets are only $5, and it happens in our lounge on April 27. Admit it, you're intrigued.

LOW TICKET WARNING: Every Wednesday on the dcimprov.com blog, we do a rundown of shows where tickets are running out. Here's a link to the latest edition.

THURSDAY-SUNDAY

Pablo Francisco: March 30-April 2

Pablo Francisco

Pablo is a high-energy tornado of voices, characters, impressions and laughs. Few comedians can throw themselves into a performance the way Pablo does. His stand-up has been featured in two one-hour specials on Comedy Central, and he was a cast member on “Mad TV.” His voice talent has also gotten national recognition, most famously his impression of “The Movie Trailer Guy” Don LaFontaine. As a club regular over the last decade-plus, he's a great part of our yearlong celebration of our 25th year in business.

NEXT WEEK

Ms. Pat: April 6-9

Want proof that laughter can get you through anything? Ms. Pat was dealing drugs in Atlanta and had two children before she was 16. She spent her 20s raising six kids (including four of her sister’s) and scraping to get by. But the amazing stories she collected in those years became the foundation for her honest and hilarious comedy routines. Since trying her first open mic in 2003, she has never slowed down. Pat is a favorite guest on all the biggest comedy podcasts, and in 2015 she appeared on “Last Comic Standing” and “This Is Not Happening.”

QUEEN OF COMEDY

Adele Givens: April 13-15

Comedy royalty makes a long-awaited return to the DC Improv this April. Queen Adele Givens is widely recognized as one of the most dynamic and entertaining performers out there – fans love her stand-up (Queens of Comedy) and her TV and movie work (The Hughleys, The Players Club and lots more). It has been far too long since she graced our stage. Welcome her back this spring!

LAST COMIC STANDING

Clayton English: April 20-23

Clayton English

Quick-witted, good-natured and flat-out funny, Clayton exploded onto the national comedy scene when he won "Last Comic Standing" in 2015. His victory lap had him performing at clubs, colleges and theaters all across the country, honing his already impressive skills. Now adding more and more TV credits to his resume, Clayton seems poised to become an even bigger star. This April, he returns to Washington for his second headlining week at the DC Improv.

DIRTY JOKES

Big Jay Oakerson: April 27-30

Jay Oakerson

Over the airwaves or on the stage, Jay’s relentless confidence and amazing command can win over almost anyone. Known as a master of crowd work and dirty jokes, he specializes in honest and hilarious stories from his own rock-and-roll lifestyle. You can hear Jay on “The Bonfire” on Comedy Central’s SiriusXM channel, you can see him on “What’s Your F***ing Deal?” on Seeso, or (best of all) you can see him headline the DC Improv for a third time this April.

Murder Mystery Comedy Show: June 21

The guys at Die Laughing productions did four murder mystery shows at the Improv in 2016. They're back in 2017 to kick off our summer, and this time they've got an '80s theme. You are attending an event at Glenbrook North High School in Chicago, IL. Students, faculty and alumni are gathering to open a time capsule that was planted exactly 30 years ago. But a still unsolved murder case will transport you back to that time when gas was under a dollar a gallon and cell phones were the size of a brick.

John Witherspoon: July 13-16

John Witherspoon is a comedy institution. Most people know him from TV and movies -- he’s the crazy father figure from “Friday,” “The Wayans Brothers” and “The Boondocks.” He’ll do anything to entertain his fans – he once cut a rap album, and he had his own internet cooking show. And he continues to tour as a great stand-up comedian. Spoon is endearing and honest, and he knows how to send a crowd home happy. One of our favorites!

Next Wave / Novak and Laker: August 5

Mike Birbiglia was at the club a few weeks ago working out his new hour special. While he was here, he also told us that his opening acts would be great for the Next Wave series.

This August, you can see Jacqueline Novak and Chris Laker headline our lounge. They're the very definition of “multi talented” – their comedy projects have included memoirs, podcasts, satellite radio programs, and more. Plus, they’re great and quirky stand-up comedians.
