Welcome to PRWeek's Weekender newsletter, which catches you up on everything you missed during the week, gives you a few long reads for the weekend, and highlights the biggest trends in the communications industry over the past seven days. Enjoy your weekend!

Finding new ways to relax this summer? A record number of TV viewers are watching the opening round of the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Brands are joining in on the patriotic fever, as well, using video and digital media to root on Team USA and connect with consumers.

And while the USA women’s national soccer team is a favorite to win the trophy, there’s a healthy debate about whether the US is still the PR and communications world’s epicenter. Editor-in-Chief Steve Barrett argues there’s something to be said for the efficient German approach to PR, as well.

The early stages of the 2016 presidential election will shift into another gear on Saturday when Hillary Clinton holds her first major public event in New York City. Meanwhile, top political communicator Robert Gibbs, President Obama’s former press secretary, may be stepping into his toughest job yet leading communications for McDonald’s.
