Welcome to PRWeek's Weekender newsletter, which catches you up on everything you missed during the week, gives you a few long reads for the weekend, and highlights the biggest trends in the communications industry over the past seven days.

Musician, actor, director, and pop culture icon David Bowie passed away on Sunday after a battle with cancer. His death elicited an enormous response, not only from fans around the world, but also from fellow creative artists, many of whom cited Bowie’s career as highly inspirational to their own. Bowie’s creativity as an artist and reputation as a savvy businessman never waned throughout his decades-long career; he released his final album, Blackstar, on his birthday, just two days before his death.

During his final State of the Union address, President Barack Obama took an optimistic tone to defend his tenure in the Oval Office: He spoke of American exceptionalism and military power, and eschewed divisive topics such as gun control and police brutality in favor of highlighting the country’s economic gains and technological advances. The Republicans running to succeed Obama zeroed in on illegal immigration, international trade conflicts with China, and America’s inability to effectively destroy Islamic State during its sixth primary debate on Thursday.
