US Weekender | May 14th 2016

Welcome to PRWeek's Weekender newsletter, which catches you up on everything you missed during the week, gives you a few long reads for the weekend, and highlights trends in the communications industry over the past seven days.

On Tuesday, PRWeek honored nine trailblazing women leaders in the communications field and hosted a panel to explore the state of gender equality in the PR industry. The first Hall of Femme networking event included a celebratory recognition of nine inductees, plus 36 Champions of PR: women who have gone above and beyond as professional communicators. Though panelists said much progress towards gender parity in PR has been made, more work needs to be done. Issues of representation at the highest levels of the industry, paid family leave, and pay disparity were some of the topics discussed.

Rebranding can be a risky move; ride-hailing app Uber’s new look was roundly criticized earlier this year. This week, Budweiser and photo-sharing app Instagram revealed new looks to mixed reviews. Budweiser’s cans will shed the brand’s name this summer, replacing it with the word “America.” Reactions from comms pros ran the gamut from “offensive” and “polarizing” to “a very bold move” and “assertive.” PRWeek readers were about split on Instagram’s colorful new look; you can voice your own opinion on it by voting here.
