US Weekender | October 10th 2015
Welcome to PRWeek's Weekender newsletter, which catches you up on everything you missed during the week, gives you a few long reads for the weekend, and highlights the biggest trends in the communications industry over the past seven days. Enjoy your weekend!

There was a unifying theme to this week’s top stories: companies are recognizing the value of explaining things clearly and concisely. For one, Volkswagen was tasked with explaining how its emissions scandal happened and how it will fix the problem. Legislators weren’t impressed with Volkswagen Americas CEO Michael Horn’s performance in front of Congress.

General Mills received more positive reviews for putting a personal touch on recall comms. Jim Murphy, SVP and president of the company’s cereal division, penned a blog explaining the recall of almost 2 million boxes of supposedly gluten-free Cheerios. He was apologetic and informative, and told consumers what they need to know to stay gluten-free.

China-based Alibaba also went on an explanation offensive this week. Often referred to simply as an “e-commerce giant,” many Americans fail to grasp the company’s true identity, mission, and purpose. It launched Alibaba Defined to explain itself.
