Kevin from our Money Sorting Squad answers: Yes, your son will need to take out backpacker/gap insurance, and it’s best to take out a policy now, rather than wait until his departure date. That way, your son will be covered if he had to cancel his trip. You can usually buy cover for six or 12 months, although some policies offer cover for as long as two years.
