A Budget for shopping around
Comparing prices to find the best deal on insurance, energy and financial products makes more sense than ever after the Summer Budget. Chancellor George Osborne hiked insurance premium tax from 6% to 9.5% from November. That means your car and home and most other insurance prices will rise, so it's more worthwhile than ever to get a range of prices every time you buy or renew.

Yesterday, we heard we've been overpaying for gas and electricity for years because, generally, we Brits haven't switched from expensive tariffs. Shopping around for the best deal is essential.

There were also dramatic changes to income tax allowances, buy-to-let mortgages, inheritance tax, dividend tax, tax evasion and vehicle excise duty. And if that's not enough, there's also a Green Paper on the future of savings in general and pensions in particular. We've rounded up the main announcements to help you find out how your finances stand.
