“How do you work out a property’s rebuild value for home insurance?”

Alan West, via email

Kevin from our Money Sorting Squad answers: To give you a quote, we use a rebuilding cost calculator from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (the Building Cost Information Service). This provides an independent estimate based on your postcode and the number of rooms there are in your home. Note that the rebuild cost is not the same as the property’s market value. In locations where house prices are high, the rebuild cost will be less than the market value, and vice versa.
