The current global refugee crisis is one of the most pressing human issues of our time. 80% of Britons want the UK government to do more to help. Since the referendum campaign and vote, divisive rhetoric has been ever more widespread from a small but vocal minority. In light of this, the need to come together in a spirit of welcome has become even more acute.
Last year, over 100,000 people turned out to show solidarity with refugees and migrants at the Refugees Welcome Here March 2015. In the same week, the government agreed to resettle 20,000 Syrian refugees – public pressure can make a difference.
Now, English PEN is one of many organisations officially supporting the Refugees Welcome Here March 2016. PEN will be marching in a bloc with migrant advocacy and campaigning centre Migrants Organise, one of our key outreach partners. From writers at risk arriving from around the world to young migrant writers who have taken part in Readers and Writers workshops, championing the human rights of recently arrived people is an integral part of the fight for freedom of expression.
Show your support for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants – join English PEN at the Migrants Organise bloc at the Refugees Welcome Here March on Saturday 17 September 2016.
