Elif Shafak is one of today’s most influential international writers and intellectuals who straddles east and west. With a suitcase of awards, she is the most widely read female writer in Turkey and her work has been translated into over 40 languages. Her latest novel, set in Istanbul and Oxford, is a sweeping tale of faith and friendship, tradition and modernity. As hopeful as she is politically sophisticated, Shafak shares her optimism and insight with translator and president of English PEN Maureen Freely

Asia House Bagri Foundation Literature Festival

The 2017 Asia House Bagri Foundation Literature Festival will feature writers and thinkers inspired by topics including the human condition, social issues, and long-forgotten pasts. Leading foreign correspondent Christina Lamb will open this year’s Festival with a discussion on what life is really like reporting from the front line in the Middle East. Elif Shafak, Nadeem Aslam, and Sabrina Mahfouz are among the other thought-provoking speakers.
