GEMS World Academy Switzerland (GWAS) get creative with videos on girls' empowerment
Students from the international school GEMS World Academy Switzerland (GWAS) spend a whole day every academic year on community service. This year, some students from the school chose to make films around the theme of GWI's mission of empowering women and girls through education up to the highest levels. GWAS teacher Gesa Robinson facilitated discussion on the social benefits of girls' education and gender equality in professional and life choices. Following this, boys and girls collaborated on three insightful and visually stunning videos, which you can see on YouTube here. Gesa reported that the students loved making these films!

Vienna branch of the Austrian Federation of University Women assist refugee women with integration
The Vienna branch of the Austrian Federation of University Women (VAOE) meet regularly with a small group of women refugees from Afghanistan, Iran and Syria. They offer friendship and try to assist with their integration into Austrian life. Members give special language tuition in German, try to meet some of their social and intellectual needs and offer practical advice on such things as hospital visits.  They also regularly go on trips together to get the women out of their refugee home and give them the experience of 'normal life' whilst getting to know Vienna. GWI and its national associations and federations (NFAs) have a history of assisting refugee women as can be seen from a long-standing fund, the Hegg Hoffet Fund, which assists graduate women who have been displaced due to war, political upheaval or other serious emergencies.

The European Commission’s Strategic Engagement for Gender Equality 2016-2019
Promoting gender equality is a core activity for the European Union (EU): equality between women and men is a fundamental EU value, an EU objective and a driver for economic growth. The European Commission’s strategy for equality between women and men will continue to focus on five key areas for action: equal economic independence for women and men; equal pay for work of equal value; equality in decision-making; dignity, integrity and ending gender-based violence; and promoting gender equality beyond the EU. The ‘Strategic Engagement for Gender Equality 2016-2019’ is a reference framework for increased effort at all levels, be they European, national, regional or local. You can read the full report here.
