Hey Guys—

One of the books every man should read is Arthur Koestler’s Darkness

At Noon.  It was published in 1940, and while it is a novel, it is
actually based on the true story of the Moscow Show Trials, where
Stalin tortured the Old Bolsheviks into confessing to ridiculous
crimes they did not commit, then had them all shot, along with millions
of other Russians.

Koestler was, at first, an ardent communist, but as he saw the reality

of communism set in, in his native Hungary, he became a leading
anti-communist, and Darkness At Noon was one of the first books to
expose the true nature of communism, especially Stalinism.  It is
horrifyingly captivating, especially the character Gletkin, and
amalgamation of Stalin’s NKVD interrogators.

Koestler went on to a somewhat controversial career as a writer and

intellectual, but he remained a staunch anti-communist, remarking
that socialism seeped into “the area of the brain where reason,
influence, and persuasion cannot reach.”

That is a phrase every man should pay attention to, because it is

not just seductive political systems that seep into that part of
the brain, it is fantastical beliefs about the way we wish things
to be.

It can, of course, be applied to the abstraction of “love,” and is

perhaps even more appropriate.  After all, when you see a woman “in
love” with a man you know to be an utter loser, no amount of facts,
logic, emotional appeals, data, influence or persuasion will change
her mind.  Only prolonged experience with reality will, and even
then she may still have bizarre justifications for the relationship.

Some people are more prone to this than others, and you need to

watch out for them.  You also need to check this in yourself, never
believing your willpower is strong enough to resist such seductive

That’s one reason why I advocate a reading of human history, as

well as reading about relationships, so you can defend against
slippery ideas that sound so good, yet end up so badly.  If, for
example, you read about the Jacobins and the French Revolution,
you are not quite so eager to take up the torch of social equality
as a brain dead college student who lives only in safe spots and
avoids microaggressions is (would the guillotine be considered a

Many, many people have fallen for such easily disproven Ideas as

“love conquers all,” “love is all you need,” “there’s someone for
everyone,” and other such nonsense that makes good fodder for rom
coms but only enriches divorce attorneys when applied in real life.

Build your defenses against such Ideas via constant reading and study

of history and attraction, and avoid all people who allow them to
seep into areas of the brain where persuasion and influence cannot
reach.  Those are where the biggest disasters always stem from.
