Minor fluctuations

Make the First Move: >> How To Make The 1st Move

Hey Guys—

When people started saving money in 401k’s invested in the stock

market, many started tuning to watch the day to day ups and downs
of the market.  If the market went down over a week or longer,
many of them panicked, sold their positions and missed out when
the market went up over the next few years.

They made panicked decisions in the moment based on minor

fluctuations, never taking into account the bigger picture.

In this day and age with instant accessibility to everything and

everyone, people are panicked by minor fluctuations more than ever.
If a guy sends a text message to a girl, and he doesn’t get one back
within a few minutes, he starts to get anxious, thinking she doesn’t
like him.  Then he’ll send another, then another, and when she
finally returns from what she was doing (i.e. having a life) she
sees 16 text messages from him, thinks he’s a weirdo and never
contacts him again.  If he’d sent one, then went out and did
something, things would have been fine.

I see it in internet marketing too.  A guy runs a campaign, isn’t

rich within an hour, and he’s despondent.  Or worse, he gets great
results to start with, then immediately spends a lot of money based
on a tiny amount of data, and loses his ass.  He made a decision
based on a minor fluctuation.

There is a saying in securities trading that goes, “the trend is

your friend.”  But the trend can only be determined after time has
passed and enough data is collected, not after a few up or down
days.  The same holds true in other walks of life, particularly
attraction.

If a girl agrees to meet you for a drink, that doesn’t mean you’re

about to get married.  It means you are going to meet a girl for a
drink.  If a woman you like doesn’t return your text message or call
immediately, it doesn’t mean she hates you, it means she didn’t
return your call or text message immediately.

Everyone is now tuned in not only to minor fluctuations, but to

minute fluctuations, with emotional ups and downs changing every
second.  This only leads to anxiety and bad decisions, never to
anything good.

A minor fluctuation should produce no emotional response in you.

You have to evaluate them over the long term and in aggregate in
order to make a proper decision, and often that evaluation shows
short term fluctuations by themselves to be ludicrous.

So disconnect yourself from those things that give you minor

fluctuations every second of every day.  Look only at the bigger
picture, look only at the trend, look only at the aggregate. That’s
what’s predictive, not something that did or didn’t happen an hour
ago.
