The Hilarious Hookup Misadventures of Fat Steve That Can Get You Laid
No Matter If You’re Fat, Thin, Short Or Tall: Fat Steve Gets Laid!

Hey Guys—

It happens every year in Austin at this time.  The overhyped,

overblown, SXSW Music Festival comes to a merciful end, and the
out of town hipsters and poofters peddle, hitchhike, slump or
sulk back to whence they came, leaving me in semi-peace for
another year.

But, every year, trash rolls into town with them, trash that knows

there’s a buck to be had by begging, whining, and wheedling.  And
the trash tends to stay for awhile because business in Austin is
good for them this time of year.

I went downtown to see a friend on Saturday night, and was accosted

(well, approached is an more accurate word, but I felt accosted) by
three separate individuals, all in their 20’s and 30’s asking for…
my help.  “Help,” of course, was in that thing the new age crowd
publicly rejects and privately craves, i.e. MONEY.

One guy had his appeal down cold.  He and his girlfriend (both were

clearly high) swayed up to me and asked if I had eaten at any good
places in Austin.  Seeing that he was toothless and unwashed (I
think he was a meth-head) I knew what he was after, but simply
replied, “there are many good places to eat in Austin.”  His rather
clever response was, “Can you help my girlfriend and I out so we
can eat in a nice place in Austin too?”

I gave him my one word answer to all manipulative requests using

the word “help,” an ice cold NO.  He quickly skittered on his way,
as did the other abusers of the word “help.”

“Help” is probably the most manipulative word in the dictionary.

It contains an element of guilt, an insinuation that because you
have more than they do, that they are somehow entitled to their
“fair share,” and you are an evil person unless you fork it over.

It also contains the implication that you an “unhelpful, uncaring”

person of low character if you do not “help” them. It is a
powerfully manipulative term because we all want to believe that
we are kind and generous enough to “help someone in need.”

But that there is the rub, because “need” is far different from want.

And what few people like to consider are the true effects of what
appears to be “helpful”  behavior.

I am not against helping someone I know who truly needs it, friends

I know who would only call in time of true need. In fact, the reason
I do not “help” manipulators is because doing so would leech away
resources I have that would help a friend in true need should they
ever call.

But I am completely against giving anything to anyone who uses the

word “help” to part someone from their hard earned, valuable money
with nothing provided in return.  It perverts the value equation,
and encourages the continued perversion of it.

So be on the lookout for those who attempt to manipulate you with

pleas for “help,” that merely translates into money with no value
delivered.  Avoid them at all costs and discourage their behavior,
preserving your money for those people in your life who deliver
true value and those true friends who might just need real help
someday, friends who would do the same for you.  That’s the true
meaning of help.
