One chance, one encounter

Hey Guys—

There is a Japanese phrase, Ichi-go ichi-e, that loosely translates

to “one chance, one encounter.”  It also translates to “this time
only,” and encompasses treasuring the meetings you have with people
because you never know when it may be your last time.

Lately this concept has been applied to, of all things, bartending,

where the bartender, who may never meet the patron ever again has
once chance in an instant to assess his or her mood and temperament,
then prepare a drink that matches that mood or temperament perfectly.

I initially read about this concept from the excellent Whisky writer,

Dave Broom in his column for Whisky Advocate, and liked it at once.
It’s a great concept to apply to attraction because many, many women
you run into are literally, one chance, one encounter.  Whether or
not you seize that chance determines whether there will be more
encounters.

When you adopt this mindset, you take your interactions with people

more seriously, not serious as in not humorous or lighthearted, but
serious as in paying closer attention and realizing that when the
moment passes, you may never see them again.  Or, you might.

As I have gotten older, I have prioritized seeing friends and people

I know more than almost anything else I do.  Not to the detriment of
fitness, business, and the necessities of everyday life, but if a
friend is coming into town I will rearrange my schedule, forego diet
(temporarily) to not only see my friends, but to make sure an
excellent, memorable time is had.  Even though I know them, each
visit is still one chance, one encounter and I may never see them
again.

When you view your interactions with women in this light, you find

you have much better success.  Women love a man who pays attention
to them, a man who is “in the moment” with them, and a man who
adopts the mindset of Ichi-go ichi-e is much more attractive by
“feel.”

You have, doubtless, been out with a woman who just wasn’t “there.”

Not mentally, of course (although you have probably interacted with
a few crazies too), but in terms of “present” her mind was elsewhere.
No connection, no chance, no encounter.

Understand that women have a deeper sense of when someone is present

or not, and if you are the slightest bit checked out (even worrying
about an inane text message) you will interrupt the flow of attraction
and of another encounter.  But if you embrace the concept of Ichi-go
ichi-e you will be far more present than most men she meets, and
that alone can make you much more attractive.

So the next time you see an attractive woman, think about one chance,

one encounter.  If you seize the chance, then you have another chance
for one chance, one encounter, perhaps a whole series of them—something
also called a relationship.
