The big risk

Hey Guys—

Yesterday in the NFL Draft the Dallas Cowboys picked #3 overall.

Two pass rushers they were interested in came off the board,
leaving them with a big chance.

Take the best overall player in the draft who was recovering from

a catastrophic knee injury or pick a solid guy.  In other words,
do you take the big risk?

The big risk is that Jaylon Smith won’t recover from his knee

injury and you waste a second round pick instead of prospering
with a very good player.  The big reward is that if he does, Dallas
gets an elite defender for the next ten years, one you have to pick
at the top of the draft to get.

The most successful people are those who take the biggest risks,

while doing everything they can to mitigate the downside risk.
Jerry Jones took a giant risk in buying the Dallas Cowboys in 1989,
using every dollar he could beg, borrow or steal to get into a
business he knew nothing about.  That risk paid off for him.

Dallas does have inside information about Smith.  The doctor who

performed his surgery, Dr. Dan Cooper is their team physician and
the best doctor in the world at knee reconstructions and nerve
regeneration.  His brother, Rod Smith, is a backup running back on
their roster, so they have all the information they possibly could.
Dr. Cooper thinks the nerve will regenerate just fine, and in a
year, he’ll be back to his old self…but he will sit out 2016.

Despite this, it IS a risk that could blow up, costing them a high

second round pick and a player they could have had.  But if you
are going to win big you have to take the big risk at times.

I have done it several times myself, losing more than winning, and

it is painful.  But the payoff of the winners makes up for the
losers, if you can handle them. And if you don’t take smart risks,
you will never, ever get rewards.

Most people are naturally risk averse, and live boring, average

lives.  If you learn to overcome natural risk adversity, take
smart risks, recognize you WILL lose some (and probably most),
you will get the rewards.

This can be especially true with women. Most men are risk averse,

seeing  a woman they want, but mentally thinking they are out of
her league.  Then they see her with an average, normal guy and
wonder what his secret is.  There is no secret—he took the big
risk of asking lots of beautiful women out, getting a lot of
rejection, and finally getting a yes.  But he decided he could
handle the risk, while the man who stayed on the sidelines took
none at all.

So take the big risk from time to time.  Plan for and expect the

downside.  Occasionally you will be surprised with the big success.
But you will never be surprised with the big success if you don’t
risk.
