Hey Guys—

I received an excellent email from David, regarding dealing with

adversity and uncertainty, two things that frighten most people.

Read his email and my comments below to discover why embracing

adversity and uncertainty leads to opportunity that does not arise
under other circumstances.

Cool Experiment.... With Sexy Women!

Dear John.

Truer words were never spoken. I lost almost everything in the

earthquakes that hit Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2010 and 2011.
I lost lots of books, which hurt a lot, including some rare books.
But it's all just stuff. I was lucky that I didn't lose anyone I
cared about. And I was surprised to find that I felt ... lightened.
It was as if an anchor had dropped away.

Where I worked got hit hard too, and after a few years, I took

voluntary redundancy and stepped off into the void. I had one short
term contract lined up ... and nothing beyond that. I did have a
fall back plan of taking early retirement someplace really cheap
to live, like southeast Asia, so I wasn't without a Plan B.

Two years later, and I am doing well. I am not rich, not financially,

and never will be. But that's not what's important. I am rich in
friends, I have a cool and wonderful (and much younger) girlfriend,
and life is good.

So if you aren't sure, but have some confidence in your abilities,

take that chance and step off into the void. You might be surprised.

JA:  Thanks for the email David…it always pains me to hear about

lost books because those are some of the most valuable possessions
you can have.  It was Berkely Breathed (the author of Bloom County)
who said, “A man who loves books is never alone.”

You do bring up a very important point about “stepping into the void”

which is something many people miss.  Colonel John Boyd (the greatest
American philosopher no one knows about) makes the point about
opportunity coming from uncertainty, and that is something I have
found to be true over and over.  Those who are afraid of uncertainty
are the ones putting themselves at the greatest risk because they
are virtually guaranteed never to get any rewards.

Business and relationships are all about uncertainty, and when you

learn to embrace it, you discover that’s where all payoffs come from.
Yes, you will fail quite a bit, but you will also succeed when sudden
opportunity presents itself, opportunity that never would have come
without embracing uncertainty.

I would also say that in addition to being rich in friends and with

women, you have also become rich in skills in dealing with uncertainty,
one of the most valuable skills a man can have.  In fact, if someone
were to ask me to name the top skills to acquire, that one would
certainly be at the top.  Uncertainty produces adversity, but both
uncertainty and adversity present opportunity that will not arise
under other circumstances.
