If you don't like the words, change the writing

Hey Guys—

While it wasn’t the best line of Season 6 of Game of Thrones, it

was a good line.  The actress Lady Crane was complaining to Arya
Stark about the bad writing in the play she was starring in and
Arya’s response was, “if you don’t like the word, change the
writing.”

It was a comment on Arya’s current situation, a mild bit of

foreshadowing of choices she makes.  But it IS also good advice
for most people, and it is advice they don’t act on.

People bitch about their jobs, but won’t find a new one.  They

bitch about their lack of money but refuse to learn how to make
more.  They bitch about being too fat but refuse to get their
lard asses to the gym and out of the donut shop.  And most of all
they bitch about their relationships.

But all they do is bitch about the writing, implying that it is

somehow preordained.  The truth is they don’t really care about
changing it, they prefer the misery they know to the unknown of
changing the writing.  AND they love to bitch.

Honestly, I have no issue with bitching as long as it goes along

with taking action to change the writing you don’t like.  But I
disassociate myself from people who prefer to spend their lives
bitching, caught between comfortable misery and the prospect of
uncomfortable action.

What most people don’t know is how easy it is to change the writing.

Sadly, the concept of changing the writing is foreign to most people.
They think their lives are preordained, that they are somehow
destined to work at a miserable job, get old, get fat, and settle
for an ugly, bitchy woman who’s settled for them.  They never even
think about changing their circumstances while they are bitching
about them.

It is, in a sense, a culturally ingrained habit. Many people simply

don’t believe they can get rich, get thin, get a hot girlfriend or
enjoy the finer things in life.  The girlie men in the media joyfully
encourage this mindset as it gives them some relief from their own
pathetic lives, and politicians who wish to keep their fat butts in
office encourage this mindset too while enjoying “special meals”
and other stolen privileges that come with being a member of the
nomenklatura.

Luckily, as an individual you can still change the writing if you

don’t like the current script.  You can go to Amazon, you can go
to the library, you can learn from others who achieved what you
have, and you can get the results you want.  There are many, many
good books on changing the writing that are just a mouse click away.

Yet few people even think about it, and if they do, it’s a fleeting

thought.  They don’t read or study or act, they just bitch. And they
live their lives as a bit character in a bad, boring dimestore novel
never knowing something much more exciting is in reach.

With today’s instant and inexpensive access to the knowledge of the

world, there is no excuse for living with bad writing.  Yet most
people choose to.  Thankfully, you don’t have to be like most
people— change your own writing and leave the bitchers behind.
