Just be yourself (stupid)

Hey Guys—

It is probably the most overused platitude in history:  just be

yourself.  You see it in TV commercials, hear it from athletes and
celebrities, and it’s a default answer when one has none.

Yet, it is terrible advice.  Why?  Because it presupposes that

because of “who you are” riches, fame, fortune, success, women,
and friends will come your way. It really is an entitlement
statement, “just be who you are and success follows.”

But it’s just not true. If your current self is unattractive,

unskilled, lazy, et al, then just being yourself will bring you
nothing but misery and failure.  You have to make yourself into
a completely new self if you wish to enjoy the good things in life.

When I was a very young man, I made it a habit to be myself.  I

was smart, yes.  I was a hard worker, yes.  But I was a horrible
salesman, completely awkward around women, and good at demeaning
those I considered less qualified than I.

That all changed when I decided to go into business.  It further

changed when I realized I wasn’t attracting any exceptionally sexy
women.  Being myself did NOT bring me money (it repelled it) nor
did it bring me sexy women (just an average one on occasion).

So I had a decision to make.  I could keep being myself for the

price of staying broke and without the company of sexy women, or
I could discard that self and build a better one. So I chose to
build a better one.

Sure, I kept some of the better elements of my old self.  But I

discarded the elements that were preventing me from getting what
I wanted, and immersed myself in the study of skills that would
bring me money and women.

I relentlessly studied sales, marketing, and attraction, and

implemented what I learned in the real world.  Most of it didn’t
work, but a few things did, so instead of whining about the world
not liking my self, I focused on what worked, did more of it, and
followed the process until I learned the skill.

Now, “being myself” does get me the things I like in life, but

only because I discarded the former self. The new self retains
some of the elements of the old self, but has much more attractive
elements because that’s what the world demands.

If you’re not where you want to be in life, not getting what you

want, then stupidly “being yourself” is not going to get you there.
You must craft a new, better self that attracts the things you
want in life.  Most people won’t do that because it involves WORK,
it’s temporarily embarrassing to the ego, and it takes a long time.
But it CAN be done, and when it is, you will get what you want by
being your NEW self.
