Stupidity repeated with authority

Hey Guys—

Many, many years ago when I worked in the oil field, I had an

arrogant high and mighty manager tell me “in a mature business,
cash flow is not important.”  I had asked him a question about
customers not paying up, and he haughtily dismissed it as irrelevant.

Even back then it seemed to me that actually getting the money was

important in business, and I thought his response stupid.  Looking
back on it, that was a kind response on my part—now that I have
actually been in business for 21 years (making me “mature,” I
suppose) I know that if you don’t get the money, you go broke.

Now, that reason the manager gave me that response back then was he

has just finished getting his MBA, which entitled him to a raise at
the company (I thought about, but never asked, if his monthly “cash
flow” was important to him), as well as a position of status. He
loved to boast about his MBA, loved to quote what he’d “learned.”
But because he was just repeating what his professors (who did not
run their own businesses either) with no personal experience, he
was merely repeating stupidity with authority.

Many, many people do it and many people who hear it believe them.

It’s not just the words that are important, it is the authority and
confidence with which they are said, and there are many people who
are very good at saying the most outlandish things they have no
experience in with authority and getting others to believe them.

Several years ago I watched a guy on stage at an internet marketing

event boast about how he was selling 20,000 kindle books a day on
Amazon.  He said it with authority, and the crowed oohed and ahhed.
Since I have experience in direct marketing (and can do math), it
took me about 5 seconds to figure out this guy was as full of shit
as a Christmas Turkey.  After all, if he was getting a $3 commission
on a kindle book (and that’s on the low end), then he would be
grossing $60k a DAY, and he would not be there. But everyone
believed him because he repeated stupidity with authority.

You want to be on the lookout for such things because they are

everywhere.  Most people just don’t want to believe they are,
because then they have to acknowledge that the world of love and
huggies and kissies they devoutly believe in doesn’t exist, and
they prefer the fantasy until reality pops them square in the face.

Moreover, you don’t want to fall into the trap of repeating things

you don’t know about with absolute authority.  Sure, you can repeat
things you disclose you are unsure about, or say something is
merely your opinion, but you want to save the things you say with
authority for things you know to be true.  That is how you build a
great reputation and earn an enormous amount of respect.

In the end, people who repeat stupidity with authority are themselves

guilty of stupidity, a very unattractive trait.  Avoid them at all
costs, and avoid becoming one of them at all costs.
