Who are you to tell me about losing weight?

Who are you to tell me about losing weight?

First of all I think that's a completely reasonable question. There are so many "diet experts" out there who really just want to sell you some rubbish gimmicky product that will leave you in the same place as you started, minus whatever cash they get you to spend. Read this and I think you'll understand why MAN v FAT is different.

My name is Andrew Shanahan and I started MAN v FAT. I certainly don't claim to be a diet expert but I am a diet champion. I support and cheer on men who want to lose weight. I started the site because I wanted to lose weight and incredibly I couldn't find any information or guidance for men. It was all about getting ripped, or it was aimed exclusively at women. It seemed stupid! I couldn't be that abnormal, could I?

I have spent my life working as a journalist for The Guardian (my profile is here), The Times and pretty much every national magazine out there (including most of the rubbish ones) and it just seemed like such a ridiculous missing link: there are 20.4 million overweight and obese men in the country - who was helping them? So I decided to start a project to help men lose weight.

You see, for a long time I wrote about food and reviewed restaurants. I'm not going to lie, it was a sweet job! You get fed at the best restaurants and you get sent loads of free food and drink. If you're smart you might see where this is going - I ate all the free food and I drank all the free drink. I got fat. Really fat. There's a picture below which shows what I looked like at around 16 stone 7lb and one that shows me at 12 stone 7lb click the buttons if you want to see...

After I'd lost the weight I was wondering what to do and in January 2014, MAN v FAT came to life as an idea. I wanted it to be somewhere that could provide content and community that was relevant for men losing weight. We raised funds through a crowdfunding campaign, which got support from Jamie Oliver and raised 102% of the £9k target. Then we launched the MANvFAT magazine, that was a big success and we've now developed that so that there is a dedicated website and a unique forum where you can find men getting help on their diets.

I've learned a lot in a year and I want to use that to help others to beat fat. Not because I know it all but because I've been there, done that and bought the XXXL t-shirt. I know just how hard it can be to lose weight and I want to make it easier for you. That's it. I don't want you to pay me for some stupid secret, or get you to buy some magic supplement. So what's who I am and that's who is sending you these emails. But as I've said before, this isn't really about me: it's about you and your battle with fat. So click the button at the top of the email and tell me who you are and what your battle with fat is all about.

Best wishes,

Shan/Admin/Andrew Shanahan.

MAN v FAT is on a mission to provide help and support to the 20.4 million men in the UK and the 1 billion men worldwide who are overweight or obese.

I have been obese (read my story here) and have experienced the damage that it can cause not just to the body, but also to confidence and health.

By sharing what we're doing you are helping to spread the word and creating a healthier and happier world. Thank you, this wouldn't be possible without your support.
