Cancer can be tough on finances. We can help

If you – or someone close to you – is experiencing financial problems due to cancer, you are not alone.

As you may know, cancer can have a financial impact – for both people with cancer and those support them. It may not be possible to earn in the same way and more money will probably be spent on everyday costs like heating and getting around. On top of this, it’s hard knowing how to plan ahead. Too often, money worries just get out of control.

When Shola had to give up work to have treatment for thymoma, a tumour affecting her thymus gland, she soon experienced financial problems. ‘I was very concerned about my financial position,’ she says. ‘Being ill and not able to work meant my salary reduced quite significantly. I ended up using a lot of my savings.’

That’s when Shola turned to Macmillan. ‘Fiona, a Macmillan benefits adviser, told me I had a good case and would probably be awarded the benefit I was applying for,’ she says. ‘Speaking to her took away a lot of the anxiety that I was having about my financial situation.’

If you or those you support have questions around money and cancer, Macmillan can give you the support, advice and information you need. Together, we can help you deal with money worries and get back to the things that matter most to you.
