NIHR Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) launch for the next five years
Following the announcement in September that £816 million was awarded to 20 NHS and University partnerships across the country, work begins in the BRCs - established to translate lab-based discoveries into new cutting edge treatments, technologies, diagnostics and other interventions in clinical settings. Major breakthrough in the manufacture of red blood cells
Researchers part-funded by the NIHR Blood Transplant Research Unit have been able to manufacture red blood cells on a more efficient scale than previously possible. If successfully tested in clinical trials, this new method of red blood cell production could eventually lead to a safe source of transfusions for people with rare blood types or in areas of the world where blood supplies are inadequate or unsafe. New tool predicts severe risks in mothers with pregnancy complications
NIHR-funded researchers have developed a new triage tool, which could save mothers’ and babies’ lives by predicting whether pregnant women diagnosed with early onset pre-eclampsia are safe to prolong pregnancy. Read more.
Stroke treatment rolled out thanks to research
Mechanical thrombectomy is to be commissioned by NHS England, following a review of evidence from NIHR supported clinical trials. Approximately 8,000 patients a year will benefit from the procedure which enables doctors to remove blood clots from the brain. Read more.
