False Alarm: There Are Plenty of Dresses in DC

Though the highlights of Sunday night’s Golden Globes included Donald Glover’s velvet “tobacco”-hued Gucci suit and the dainty “Fuck Paul Ryan” button that Lola Kirke pinned to her pretty princess dress, the major headline coming out of the awards show can be summarized thusly: Meryl Streep used her time onstage to speak out against the bullying behavior of “the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country,” and then Donald Trump called her “over-rated” and a “Hillary flunky.

In a subsequent interview with the New York Times, Trump touched on the Streep affair and, regarding the presence of Hollywood players at his inauguration on January 20th, delivered this tidbit:

“We are going to have an unbelievable, perhaps record-setting turnout for the inauguration, and there will be plenty of movie and entertainment stars,” Mr. Trump said. “All the dress shops are sold out in Washington. It’s hard to find a great dress for this inauguration.”

What have actually been difficult to procure are performers willing to take the stage at Trump's inauguration. Surely there can’t be a dress shortage, too!

An employee at the Neiman Marcus at the Mazza Gallerie told Racked, when asked whether it had evening gowns available, “Absolutely. A lot of them!” A staff member at Saks Fifth Avenue at Mazza Gallerie informed us that it does indeed have evening collections in stock at the moment. An employee at Gucci City Center said that clients can shop its ready-to-wear by appointment, and that offering “absolutely” includes evening dresses. A local Lord & Taylor has “a lot of eveningwear dresses,” according to an employee, and they’re 15 percent off with a Lord & Taylor Card! Betsy Fisher is “definitely not sold out,” in the words of one employee reached Monday morning. BCBG Georgetown has a “pretty good selection.” Nordstrom in Arlington, Virginia does indeed have black tie dresses in store right now, according to an employee.

Finally, staffers for Hu’s Wear and Carolina Herrera in City Center had “no comment.”

So there you have it. You can buy a black tie dress in DC. Case closed. —Eliza Brooke, senior reporter

The Golden Globes red carpet this year was full of a lot of sparkly dresses, several with odd sleeves. Many of these dresses were custom-made, and the ones that weren’t cost thousands of dollars. Depressing.

But the lipstick that Kerry Washington wore? Now that is something you can actually buy without giving up your rent money.

The Drugstore Pencil Eyeliner That Goes On So Smooth

L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner, $8.95

Before Lauren Conrad’s perfect wings and Alia Bhatt’s smoldering stare, I like to think my belief in the magic of my favorite eyeliner originated from a love of one thing: comfort. Probably not the first word you’d associate with putting a pointed tip so close to your eyeballs, right? That’s what I thought, too, until I stumbled upon the L'Oréal Paris Voluminous Smoldering Eyeliner ($8.95).

Unlike most eye pencils, which tug at the delicate corners of the eyes, this chubby little stick is soft as ice cream and goes on much smoother than most stiletto-skinny liners from other brands. Richly pigmented, this kajal-inspired pencil allows the black color (or brown or gray, whatever you fancy) to settle into your skin seamlessly. Wearing this eyeliner feels like sleeping in on a Sunday, or the way your hair looks when you’ve nowhere to go.

As someone who alternates between the searing hot temperatures of South Asia and the Arctic blasts of New York City winters, I can confidently say this pencil has not only withstood, but flourished in the face of the stickiest humidity and the sharpest gusts. Far from wimpy, this little pencil lasts forever. And the best part? Mistakes are just a smudge away, no cotton ball or makeup remover needed. Oh, and it also comes with a special sharpener.

I’ve been known to run it under a lighter (only for half a nanosecond, I swear!) because, like a really good ice cream sundae, eyeliner — and this one in particular — is best when it’s a little melted and warm. —Alizah Farooqi, social media editor
