It’s time to face facts: The summer is over. Labor Day weekend has come and gone, school has begun, and in most parts of the country, the weather is starting to turn. While spring is typically the season most commonly associated with cleaning, there’s really no better time to do a huge closet overhaul than fall. (How else are you going to make room for new coats and boots?)

Some people take pleasure in purging and organizing, but for most of us this is going to be a chore. So this year, we’re here to help. For the next week, we’ll be sharing a bunch of stories aimed at getting your life in order — as it pertains to the clothes you wear, at least. We’ll tackle how to donate and resell your old stuff, the best things to buy to organize your closet, tips on setting — and sticking to — a shopping budget, and more.

Tales from Retail Startup Land

Fresh off the holiday weekend, retail startups old and new are buzzing with news.

Remember Gilt? The flash-sale pioneer has been around for ten years, and while its competitors shuttered or pivoted as shoppers grew tired of the once-novel online shopping model, Gilt held fast to the concept. Today, though, Gilt is finally doing away with flash sales and launching a new website. Now shoppers can get full-price and off-price luxury goods, searching for product by category or designer, and merchandise won’t disappear off the site anymore once a sale expires. The move might be a little too late for Gilt, but the company tells Racked it still has 9 million active users — shoppers who pine for high-end labels, but also love a bargain (who doesn’t?).

Our other scoop comes courtesy of shoe brand Allbirds. It makes Silicon Valley’s favorite sneaker, but now the company wants to venture beyond the tech bro world. It just announced another $17.5 million round of funding, which it will use to add stores, expand into kids’ shoes, and research natural materials. The brand only sells two styles in a handful of colors, but big-name investors (like Warby Parker’s Neil Blumenthal) and its reputation as “the world’s most comfortable shoe” might just make it a truly viable footwear player.Chavie Lieber, senior reporter

Disney has historically ruled its intellectual property with an iron fist, so why is the company allowing so many fan stores — like Instagram darlings Cakeworthy and The Lost Bros — to thrive?
