Gucci Attempts to Right Its Copycat Wrongs

Dapper Dan Designs for Gucci
Dapper Dan in new Gucci ads.

In May, Gucci elicited a wave of criticism over a fur coat with puffy, logo-laden sleeves that unmistakably mimicked a jacket that the Harlem-based designer Daniel “Dapper Dan” Day had created for the Olympic runner Diane Dixon in 1989. Though much of Day’s work in those days hinged on copying logo prints from luxury houses, Gucci’s version added yet more fuel to an ongoing debate over the place of appropriation in fashion, and particularly the appropriation of black culture by white designers. At the time, Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele defended the jacket as an “homage,” and Day didn’t say much.

Today, Gucci dropped a new set of menswear ads, and they feature a familiar face: Day, photographed on the streets of Harlem.

In fact, the New York Times reports that Gucci and Day are now working together in a capacity more concrete than an ad campaign. Day, whose store closed in 1992, is planning to reopen a studio for custom orders, and Gucci will be providing “the raw materials” for the clothing. Day is also collaborating on a Gucci capsule collection that will drop in the spring.

Gucci failed to note Day’s influence when it debuted that fur jacket in May, one reason why it kicked up so much criticism. Clearly, the brand is trying to make up for that now. —Eliza Brooke, senior reporter

Shopping a big multibrand site like Need Supply Co. makes sense when you’re trying to check off a fall shopping list, especially since a lot of what’s on sale will work for the upcoming season. Need some everyday shoes? You can get a good pair of ankle boots from Intentionally Blank for half-off, leaving enough left over for all-white Stan Smiths. Then filter to under $100 for clothes to pair with them, like straight-leg trousers for almost $100 off and an A.P.C. sweatshirt in a really pretty gray-blue hue.

Where to Buy the Most Asked-About Item from 'Broad City'
Abbi and Ilana from Broad City

Photo: Comedy Central

Winter is coming for the women of Broad City. Comedy Central’s hit stoner sitcom returns this Wednesday for season 4, and for the first time, we’ll see Abbi (Abbi Jacobson) and Ilana (Ilana Glazer) take on the slushy, snowy streets of New York in January.

The decision to set the show during the winter presented series costume designer Staci Greenbaum with a new challenge: Adapting the leading ladies’ signature styles to freezing weather. (A particularly tricky task when it came to dressing Ilana, who lives in sheer shirts and high-waisted hot pants.)

With the winter setting, it was tough to write in the girls’ iconic looks, like Abbi’s blue bandage dress and Ilana’s lattice bra, but both will still make appearances. Greenbaum said she gets a lot of questions about that strappy bra, and told us where to buy it:

“It’s from a store called LF, and it’s just a really fun, easy way to accessorize. It’s a great bra because it fits pretty much everyone; Ilana, who’s pretty busty, feels totally secure and comfortable in it.”

Over a Dozen Perfect Jackets for Fall’s In-Between Weather
Girl in long navy coat

Summer isn’t technically over for another week, but fall is officially here as far as we’re concerned. This means a lot of things (Halloween decorations are in stores! You’re probably out of vacation days!), but more than anything, it means that it’s time to find the delicate balance between summer and fall dressing for the in-between days of September.

In reality, though, much of the transitional confusion can be settled (for the most part) by your outerwear. Something light, like denim or a quilted jacket, can still hold its own as proper outerwear on those humid, high 70-degree days. More substantial options, like a trench coat or classic leather, will be your best bet when the real autumn chill kicks in.
