10 Things to Know About This Black Friday

After weeks of warming up, Black Friday sales have finally reached a fever pitch. It’s the one day a year when pretty much everything can be bought at a discount. If you’re looking for holiday gifts, trying to save on much-needed basics, or feel like splurging on something special, you would be wise to shop. But obviously there’s a lot — and we mean A LOT — to sift through.

We’ll be online all day answering questions (tweet yours @Racked with the hashtag #AskRacked, or drop it in our Facebook group), highlighting deals, and just generally participating in the online melee. But to make your life a little easier, we’re sharing the top 10 things you need to know about Black Friday right in this newsletter.

So follow along on our sales coverage, and enjoy the TL;DR of the best deals below. Cory Baldwin, shopping editor

Glossier is having a very rare sale. It’s 20% off sitewide, which isn’t crazy, but if you need to restock on Milky Jelly Cleanser and Boy Brow and/or have been meaning to try out the brand’s sunscreen, Body Hero Duo, or Cloud Paint — now available in a four-pack — now’s the time.

Racked’s shopping team has been obsessing over Danish import Ganni and its fun, trendy, relatively affordable take on Copenhagen style. (Apparently, we’re not alone — the brand was the number one seller at Net-a-Porter last season.) You can try it out on the cheap thanks to a bunch of different sales, including at Net-a-Porter (50% off), The Outnet (50% off),  Need Supply (up to 50% off),  Shopbop (extra 30% off with code MORE17), and ASOS (up to 60% off).

Tip: Skip any mall brand sales that are less than 50% off. If you’re only planning to spend a certain amount of money on Black Friday, why waste any of it on a brand that has 30- and 40-percent-off promotions all the time? Here’s the TL;DR on the ones worth hitting up: Old Navy will be offering up to 50% off, with deals from $5; Ann Taylor is offering 50% off all purchases from the 23rd through the 27th; Loft’s deal is 40% off now and hits 50% off on Cyber Monday; Banana Republic is also offering 50% off everything through the 26th; and H&M has a ton of basics marked down below $20.

Fancy headphone brand Master & Dynamic is having a sitewide 20%-off sale from the 24th through the 27th. If you have someone special on your list who’s hard to shop for, we’re willing to bet they will appreciate a pair of sleek wireless headphones (and you’ll appreciate the over-$100 discount).

Cult-fave fine jewelry designer Pamela Love’s Beaumont collection has been blowing up all over Instagram and in just about every indie boutique for the last year. If you’ve had your eye on a few pieces, like we have, you can help yourself to 30% off sitewide from the 24th through the 27th. Our pick: These small brass earrings at $84.

Eberjey’s Black Friday sale is 30% off sitewide, and we recommend using it to buy the brand’s truly great Gisele pajama set (if all women still had regular weekend sleepovers in their late 20s and 30s, these would be the pajamas your most-put-together friend would wear). The shorts-and-short-sleeved set is on sale for $71, and the pants-and-long-sleeved set is $84. Still pricey? Yes. But comfortable as hell.

Cole Haan is having a pretty epic sale, with 50% off 500 items and 30% off everything else. You may normally think of the brand in regards to wear-to-work pumps and brogues, but  there are a lot of other items on offer, including some of the cutest (and warmest!) snow boots around, currently on sale for $189.

If there is ever a time to splurge on fancy leggings, it’s during the Black Friday/Cyber Monday chaos. Beyond Yoga, maker of the softest leggings in the world, will be offering 30% off sitewide from the 24th through the 26th. Pick up a pair of the classic Take Me Higher Long Leggings for $61, down from $88.

Etsy is hosting its first-ever Cyber Week — lovers of vintage, crafting, and handmade knick knacks, rejoice! You can grab 60% off a selection of items across pretty much every category, from home decor and craft supplies to jewelry and accessories.

Tip: Don’t blow all your money today. There are several brands and retailers planning to crank up discounts for Cyber Monday, and a few really good ones are only happening on that day. Check out the list of sales to wait for.
