Weekly Update: Brookdale Roller Coaster Ride, Prime Time for Assisted Living

It's prime time for senior living! On network TV, that is.

The Senior Housing News team was excited at the news that CBS is developing a comedy called “Assisted Living,” and Will Ferrell is involved. Fox and NBC also have senior housing shows in the works. In other celebrity news: One Direction’s Harry Styles called bingo at a UK care home.

In more serious news, the Brookdale roller coaster ride continues. Its shares soared on news of transactions with HCP last week, then plummeted after earnings showed a big loss and continued challenges, and no new info regarding a change of ownership deal, then shot back up after a disclosure that its activist shareholder had increased its stake.

The most-read story of the week did not involve BKD, however. It was our interview with incoming LCS CEO Joel Nelson, who shared his plans for taking the company in some new directions.

Incoming CEO

There’s a changing of the guard happening at the nation’s third-largest senior living provider, with its long-time CEO about to step down. However, a familiar face is taking the wheel and setting a course for the future.

The stock market up-and-down continued for Brookdale Senior Living (NYSE: BKD) Tuesday, as the nation’s largest senior provider saw its share price drop in the hours after its third-quarter earnings call.

Quote of the Week

“We use drones every month for every project under construction.”

Executive Vice President, CA Senior Living

The “uberization” of drones has arrived, with on-demand services giving senior housing developers a new way to oversee construction, improve investor relations and boost marketing efforts.

National Health Investors (NYSE: NHI) put up strong numbers for the third quarter, but it has some troubled tenants to deal with in its senior living portfolio.
