Explore the Fundamentals of Fiction while receiving guidance and feedback. You'll learn to set the stage and move the plot along to engage the reader. Within twelve weeks you will have a better grasp of what makes your writing shine. The online workshop's weekly assignments provide the basis for you to write a novel chapter or short story in the final weeks of class.

In the Fundamentals of Fiction Writing Workshop, you will have the opportunity to write character profiles, write characterization studies, write a first-person POV scene, rewrite the same scene in third-person POV, write a series of connected scenes, write a polished draft of a complete short story or novel chapter, and learn the key elements to making successful revisions. The exercises and assignments will help you add spark to your fiction and come up with an incredible story.

"It’s what I love — writing stories, reading stories, helping new writers write their stories. I’ll go out to a concert or movie or play with friends, but I can never wait to get back to my 'work.' For me, it’s not work. I can’t believe I get paid for doing what I love. Sometimes I feel guilty."

  ~ Gloria Kempton

A class member said, "The feedback that I received from Gloria has been invaluable." This workshop will cover all of the basics of writing fiction including choosing the right setting, character building, point of view, writing dialogue, and more.

Fundamentals of Fiction with Gloria Kempton

Gloria Kempton has two passions: writing and working with writers. Gloria is currently working on several projects; a mainstream novel, a book of essays about her years as a prison volunteer, and a book for writers on unlocking the unconscious. She has published more than 600 stories and articles in more than sixty publications in the juvenile, young adult, family, and religious markets.

Many of her students have received contracts from publishers. One student received a three-book contract and a six-figure advance for her young adult series. As the former acquisitions editor at a publishing house and a freelance novel editor at major publishing houses, Gloria understands what happens on both sides of the desk. In her classes, you will find support and encouragement, as well as honest evaluation of your work. You can count on being asked a lot of questions that will help you get to the core of what it is that you want to communicate. Instruction is individualized because you are unique and your writing should reflect your unique voice.
