Professional Copyediting: Tools of the Trade is a tool for budding copy editors to take their skills to the next level. Each session's lecture will address specific topics, such as how to edit quotations, common blunders to avoid, and differences between editing an article and tackling a book-length work; each will discuss aspects of grammar and usage, with writing samples that demonstrate these aspects properly used; and each will include practice exercises and a writing assignment which the students have edited themselves for the instructor to assess and provide feedback.

Those who have taken the Introduction to Copyediting course, and those who have actually obtained and completed a few copyediting jobs, know just what copyediting entails and how much knowledge must be acquired to do the job well. They understand the basics of grammar and have a good grasp of the English language-they may be accomplished writers themselves-but they need more practice as copy editors in order to recognize and rectify the writing blunders of others. This workshop covers the specific skills necessary to thrive in situations copy editors are commonly needed, such as at newspapers and for book-length texts.

The course will highlight rules from both The Chicago Manual of Style (for those who copyedit books) and The Associated Press Stylebook (for those who copyedit news), and will explain why the Webster's Dictionary is so important.

This workshop will consist of four one-week sessions. Each session will include an online lecture and grammar and usage instruction, writing samples featuring the grammar and usage discussed, practice exercises for the student to attempt on her own, and an edited writing assignment that will be submitted to the instructor for private review. Student exercises will also be posted for group review and feedback. Throughout the workshop you will be able to participate in asynchronous lecture discussion and you will be encouraged to take advantage of ongoing informal discussions and posted self-directed writing exercises.

In this course you will:

Brush up on the basics of copyediting and broaden your skills
Become aware of common writing blunders
Delve more deeply into your usage guide
Edit practice copy that reinforces what you've learned
Receive editing feedback on your writing/editing assignments

Broaden your Copyediting Skills!
