In the Short Story Fundamentals class you will have the opportunity to write and submit the beginning, middle, and end of your short story in sections. You will pay special attention to structure and pacing. You'll keep in mind the way you balance the internal lives of your characters with the external action of the story. You'll get a chance to write in flashbacks and flash forwards. Then, you'll revise and submit a complete draft of your short story for critique.

"Writing short stories has taught me so much about how to construct meaningful narratives and engaging characters. I find it both challenging and thrilling to have to confine all the conflict and worldbuilding of a story idea into such a small space, and I think the work of getting it right is one of the best ways to strengthen craft and tighten up our prose."

  ~ Daniel José Older

One student said, "Very helpful for such a short class. Very encouraging, don't be intimidated." Another student said, "Very interesting, thank you!"
