Yale-NUS: A partner in name only?

Yale-NUS, the five-year-old joint venture between Yale and the National University of Singapore, is thriving. The school has also received plaudits for its rigor and innovation. Over the past five years, it has also emerged as one of the most selective undergraduate schools worldwide — even more selective than Yale for most of its application cycles. But just what role Yale continues to play in that success is unclear.

Black Student Alliance at Yale holds 50th anniversary celebrations

BSAY’s anniversary commemorates half a century of advocacy and community engagement that led to the establishment of African-American Studies at Yale, the construction of the Afro-American Cultural Center, an increase in black student enrollment and improved relations with the black New Haven community, among other accomplishments.

New colleges hold inauguration ceremony

On Oct. 8, 1917, construction workers laid the first cornerstone for the Memorial Quadrangle, which would later become Saybrook and Branford colleges, to house undergraduate students. Almost exactly a century later, the University held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for Benjamin Franklin and Pauli Murray colleges, marking the official realization of a project two decades in the making.

DeLauro pledges support for the undocumented

U.S. Representative Rosa DeLauro, D-New Haven, hosted a round-table event to discuss the future of DACA, which President Donald Trump announced he would rescind last month. Local DACA recipients, activists and other community members gathered at Gateway Community College to share stories and hear DeLauro’s thoughts on the program.

CREW: Teams off to strong start

Rowing for the first time on their home course, the Bulldogs quickly hit their strokes. In the Women’s Collegiate Eights, the Elis finished in both first and second places and placed all four boats in the top 14. In the Men’s Collegiate Eights, the first Yale heavyweight boat recorded an emphatic first-place finish in the Men’s Collegiate and the second edged out Brown for third place.

"The purpose of the residential college system was never merely to provide housing. Its main purposes — a deep and lasting fidelity to one’s college, a respect for the challenges and benefits of communal living and a kind of residential republicanism — remained ambitious, at times even unrealistic. Yale students have, until the present moment, seen the advantages of the college system."
